Twelfth Grade Summer Reading AssignmentDirectionsThe first 12th Grade unit is “Writing the Personal Narrative for College.” Your summer reading is to choose and read an age appropriate memoir. This year, we have selected four texts for you to choose from and have made PDF copies available to you online. You are not strictly required to choose a book from our list; if there is another memoir you would prefer to read, you may do so. If you choose books not included on the list, they must be memoirs and you must have your teacher’s approval. Email your teacher with your book selection for approval and submit their response with your summer reading in September. For your selected book, you will complete 4-5 reflective journal entries. Your entries should focus on events throughout the text. Choose 4-5 significant events that occur in the text that have a significant impact on the protagonist (usually the author, in the case of a memoir) with regard to his/her sense of identity. Explain what the event is, how it impacts the protagonist, and how it affects/changes their sense of identity.Reflect on your own experiences and write about a time when you were similarly impacted by an event in your life. How did this event impact how you see yourself as an individual, or cause you to reevaluate your interests, goals, and/or priorities in life? Be prepared to turn in your journals to your 12th Grade English teacher in September.Where can I get my summer reading books? On your 11th Grade English Teacher’s Google Classroom or the District WebsiteAt bookstores (i.e. Barnes and Noble) has most books at affordable pricesAt the Franklin Township Public LibraryCopies of older titles are sometimes available online for freeBook Title Author Synopsis Tuesdays with MorrieMitch AlboumMaybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague who understood you when you were young and searching and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live.Me Talk Pretty One DayDavid Sedaris A recent transplant to Paris, humorist David Sedaris, bestselling author of "Naked,” presents a collection of his strongest work yet, including the title story about his hilarious attempt to learn French. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States.Summer Reading Response Journal #1Title of the Memoir: Page # or Chapter: An event that impacts the protagonist’s sense of identity is… I can relate to the way the protagonist responds to this event because…Summer Reading Response Journal #2Title of the Memoir: Page # or Chapter: An event that impacts the protagonist’s sense of identity is… I can relate to the way the protagonist responds to this event because…Summer Reading Response Journal #3Title of the Memoir: Page # or Chapter: An event that impacts the protagonist’s sense of identity is… I can relate to the way the protagonist responds to this event because…Summer Reading Response Journal #4Title of the Memoir: Page # or Chapter: An event that impacts the protagonist’s sense of identity is… I can relate to the way the protagonist responds to this event because…Summer Reading Response Journal #5Title of the Memoir: Page # or Chapter: An event that impacts the protagonist’s sense of identity is… I can relate to the way the protagonist responds to this event because… ................
