Parent permission letter - Lancaster High School

September 22nd, 2014

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Students will be starting our first novel in ELA on Thursday this week. This novel is Trash by Andy Mulligan. This novel is a valuable read, however, due to some mild adult language; I want to inform you beforehand.

Below is a brief summary of the novel:

In an unnamed Third World country, in the not-so-distant future, three “dumpsite boys” make a living picking through the mountains of garbage on the outskirts of a large city.

One unlucky-lucky day, Raphael finds something very special and very mysterious. So mysterious that he decides to keep it, even when the city police offer a handsome reward for its return. That decision brings with it terrifying consequences, and soon the dumpsite boys must use all of their cunning and courage to stay ahead of their pursuers. It’s up to Raphael, Gardo, and Rat—boys who have no education, no parents, no homes, and no money—to solve the mystery and right a terrible wrong.

Some reasons why this book has been selected as part of our curriculum are 1.) it is a well written 2.) it is one of the few novels we have that changes point of view 3.) it raises political, social, and human issues that are important and relevant 4.) students will gain perspective on the issue of poverty in the world and 5.) it is an action packed mystery that will motivate our students to read.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me as soon as possible. There are also some informative links on my webpage that will also inform you about the novel.

All students are required to bring back this permission slip by Wednesday, September 24th.

If you do not want your son/daughter to read this novel, please communicate this on the permission slip below. Students who do not read Trash will read a different book and work independently.

Sincerely,

Casandra Godios
