Chapter 9: Benefits and Hazards: Mindful Consumption Description:Identifying how and when a person uses an ICT is the first step toward developing healthy, mindful habits around ICT use. Objective: Students will compare differences between how frequently they think they use their mobile device and apps on their device to their actual weekly use. AssignmentStep 1: Ask students to fill out the Mobile Use Predicted Behaviors handout. Remind students there are no right or wrong answers. Step 2: Explain each app on the phone is categorized. The handout provides examples of different categories. Ask students to predict, as best they can, how many minutes (hours) they spend using each type of app per week.Step 3: Ask students to predict how many times a day/week they pick up their phones. This behavior relates to the “dopamine hit” we get from looking at different apps. It also reveals interesting patterns of prosumption and consumption. Step 4: After students complete the predictions handout, ask them to complete Mobile Use Behaviors.Step 5: Instruct students to locate either the Screen Time (IOS devices) or Digital Well Being (Android devices) application in the settings of their mobile phone. Step 6: Ask students to complete the handout for Mobile Use Behaviors. Students can review this week or last week’s data on their phone using the handout to capture the data. Note: this data is tracked within the operating system of most mobile phones and is available to the user. If the most recent operating system is installed on the phone, an additional download is notrequired. Step 7: Ask students to compare their predicted use to their actual use. Optional Debrief via in class discussion or reflection paper. Ask students to consider:Do you spend more or less time on your mobile device than predicted? Is the amount of time you spend online healthy? Were you surprised by the frequency with which you picked up your phone each day?Did you accurately predict the apps you use most frequently? What did you learn about your online behaviors because of this activity?Mobile Use Predicted BehaviorsThis activity asks you to predict how many minutes/hours a week you use each type of app or website, how many times a week you pick up your phone, and which app you use most frequently after you pick up your phone.
