INTRODUCTION
John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men to respond to the struggles and hardships of many Americans during the Great Depression and the dust bowl. Our main characters are migrant workers, (one has a mental disability), who struggle to make ends meet and only have their friendship to guide them to their hopes and dreams.
OBJECTIVE
Grasp an understanding of the background of John Steinbeck and his novel before reading as it will help in understanding all the issues and themes surrounding the story.
REQUIREMENTS
1. You must complete 2 out of the 4 one-pagers. If you complete the 3rd one pager, it will be extra credit.
a. The one-pagers must be thoroughly and insightfully done on one side of a blank sheet of paper and have:
i. A creative title
ii. Address all questions (separated on one pager with titles)– creatively express them (paragraph, list, web, advertisement)
iii. Visual component – choices are given
b. You can do research on the Internet but you must get information from 2 books. For the information you get from the Internet and books you must place a parenthetical citation next to any analysis.
2. Works Cited Page. This will be completed on a separate sheet of paper. (10 points)
a. You can find how to complete this from the GHS Style Manual. Look at pages 31-52.

1. What are the geographical features of the Salinas valley in California?
2. What kinds of jobs are available here?
3. What was John Steinbeck’s relationship to the Salinas Valley?
4. For the visual component, create a map of the area with significant locations identified: the Salinas River, Salinas valley, Salinas, Fresno, San Francisco, Soledad, Monterey, Monterey Bay, San Jose, the Gabilan Mountains, Sacramento, the American River near Sacramento, the Sacramento River, Weed, Auburn, the Santa Lucia Mountains

3. Who were the migrant workers and how did the Great Depression affect them?
4. Do migrant workers exist today? Where? What kinds of jobs do they have?
5. For the visual portion of your presentation, develop the front page of a newspaper during the depression. Sketch an actual photo taken from the depression and add a caption describing the photo.

1. What is a mental disability and how does it affect a person's everyday life?
2. What are some of the difficulties in caring for a mentally disabled person?
3. What kinds of support are available for caregivers?
4. For the visual portion of your presentation, find statistics centered around mental disabilities. Visually represent the statistics you found through a chart, graph or diagram.
BIOGRAPHERS
