POSITION SUMMARY

Assistant/Associate Professor, non-tenure track, in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. This position requires teaching, practice, service to the school, campus and the profession, and scholarly activity as an infectious disease specialist.

The position is a full-time, 12 month appointment based on our Baltimore campus. In addition to teaching, service, and scholarly activity, this faculty member will provide leadership in their area of specialty and will develop a clinical practice.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

This position is responsible to the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. Clinical reporting responsibility is to the medical/pharmacy director or designee at the practice site. Teaching reporting responsibility is to the Chair of the Department through the Vice Chair for Education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An earned Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy plus 2-years of post-graduate training (residency, fellowship, or equivalent experience), and teaching experience are required. Eligibility for Maryland licensure is required. Excellent communication and patient skills are essential. Board certification (eg – added qualifications in ID; AAHIVP; etc) and evidence of clinical research are preferred. Applicants with several years of experience are especially desirable. A more specific delineation of responsibilities follows:

POSITION DUTIES

I. EDUCATION

A. Ability to teach a broad range of topics related to infectious disease and the management of acute or ambulatory patients. Teaching responsibilities will be determined in discussions with the Vice Chair for Education.

B. Provide pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics instruction in didactic courses in our entry-level PharmD program.

C. Develop and teach in advanced pharmacy practice experiences for pharmacy students and residents at the clinical site.

D. Provide clinical education in an acute or ambulatory care setting to students (pharmacy, medicine, and nursing), residents (pharmacy and medicine), pharmacists, nurses, physicians, patients, and patient caregivers.

II. PRACTICE

A. Develop active practice at a partner institution consistent with area of expertise.

The clinical faculty member will provide clinical pharmacy services to patients.

Responsibilities will include:

A. Participating in direct patient care with the Antimicrobial Management Team

B. Assisting with therapeutic decisions such as antimicrobial selection, dosing and therapeutic drug monitoring.

C. Ensuring and enforcing compliance with established clinical protocols, including the restricted antimicrobial protocols and guidelines with the multidisciplinary care providers.

D. Identifying and implementing programs that ensure cost effective use of antimicrobials

III. SCHOLARSHIP

A. Engage in scholarly activity in areas of interest. Scholarship is broadly interpreted and may include the development of innovative pharmacy practices, evaluation of therapeutic outcomes, and implementation and assessment of novel instructional methods.

B. Scholarly activity is required; publication and presentation of work is expected.

C. Scholarly activity may be pursued either independently or in collaboration with other schools, departments, or campus faculty.

IV. SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY, SCHOOL, AND PUBLIC

A. Participate in appropriate faculty activities (e.g. faculty assembly, department meetings, faculty committees), professional organizations, and other endeavors is also expected.

Additionally, the School of Pharmacy has a satellite campus at the Universities of Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland.
