OUR CHAPTER CONFERENCE

November 5th at St. Charles Convention Center

It’s filling up fast so be sure to sign up for yourself

or your group as soon as possible!!

Don’t be left out!!

See our website at to register!!

Your Chance is NOW!

September is the month for 2013 local chapter officer nominations. This is YOUR chance to make a difference in your chapter. YOU have the ability to nominate a fellow chapter member who has demonstrated their commitment to your local chapter and to AAPC. These are the members who have the desire, passion and enthusiasm needed to help the local chapter secure meaningful speakers, share pertinent education, mentor new and existing members, encourage networking, keep the chapter accountable with the funds, provide and issue those ever-needed CEUs, submit the required paperwork to AAPC, provide the certification exam for those up and coming certified coders and members reaching for additional certifications, teach professionalism by demonstrating leadership at chapter meetings, move the chapter forward with great ideas, and continue the quest to be the 2013 AAPC CHAPTER OF THE YEAR!

Look around you! There are those at your chapter meeting who fit these descriptions and can fill these requirements. It is YOUR responsibility to nominate those members. Don’t depend on someone else to make the nominations – show your members YOU have faith in their abilities, you believe in them, you value them as a member and you KNOW your chapter will benefit under their leadership. NOMINATE, NOMINATE, NOMINATE!

While you are at it, answer this question – What are YOU willing to do for your chapter? Do you care who leads your chapter in 2013? Are you concerned with advancing your chapter? Do you have ideas for speakers and topics? STEP FORWARD! Be a 2013 local chapter officer nominee! Nothing but good will come from your efforts!

In a nutshell:

• President – leads the local chapter meeting

• Vice-President – assists in planning the local chapter meetings, conducts the nominations and elections

• Secretary – helps maintain the sign in sheets at local chapter meetings, completes minutes

• Treasurer – maintains chapter funds, submits quarterly reimbursement requests, submits Profit & Loss statement

• Education Officer – secures and arranges local chapter meeting speakers and education, issues CEUs for chapter meeting attendees

• Member Development Officer – mentors all members, provides networking for all members

Your chance is NOW to nominate yourself and your fellow chapter members to fill these positions.

From The Secretary

If you aren’t learning something, you are standing still!! Now is the time to get in motion and help your chapter!! You may think you don’t have what it takes to be an officer. You don’t have the time, you don’t have the patience, you don’t have the creativity…..I’m here to tell you differently. Everyone has talent and maybe yours is just waiting to be discovered. We need people with new talent to take us into the next year. We need YOU!! I’ve held several offices on our chapter board, and I frankly didn’t know much until I said I was willing to learn. The best thing about being an officer is working with other people on the board. It is us, working as a GROUP, who accomplishes so much. No one has to be alone in a decision. We all work together on ideas until we think we have a good one. The past presidents are there to help all the officers and you would never be set adrift. So, come on, you know you want to…There are some great benefits to being an officer and you will never really understand them until you jump in and volunteer to run for an office. We’ll help you discover you hidden talent!

Barbara Fontaine, CPC – Secretary 2012

OUR SEPTEMBER SERVICE PROJECT

Donations, Donations, Donations!

Wear your chapter tee shirt to our meeting for an extra point, and donate too!!!

Just a friendly reminder that the AAPCCA National Hardship Scholarship Fund is alive and well! This wonderful concept was announced at the National Conference in Las Vegas. The purpose of this fund is to assist fellow members with AAPC related expenses during a documented financial hardship. This Fund is maintained solely on member donations. As a local chapter or as an individual AAPC member, please consider donating to this fund. Our chapter is working toward full participation and we will grant a point for education if you bring a $5.00 donation for the fund.

All checks should be made out to AAPCCA Scholarship Fund or we will also take cash at our next meeting on September 20th. All cash donations will be added to the chapter check that we will be sending.

If you won’t be there for our chapter meeting please consider sending $5 or more dollars to:

PLEASE Save Your 2012 Coding Books!

Have you ever wondered what to do with your “expired” coding books? Did you know there are fellow chapter members who would LOVE to have those coding books?

The Hardship Scholarship Committee, formed as part of your AAPCCA Board, has discovered how important coding books from the previous year are to members who are struggling to retain their comprehension and maintain their credentials. So many members are out of work or not currently working in the coding field, and these books would be a tremendous benefit to them as they review the Coding Edge.

Please consider donating your 2012 coding books to your chapter or fellow chapter members who might otherwise not have these resources. If you have any extra books, please let an officer know.

Thank you!

AUGUST CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES

|St. Louis Professional Coders West Chapter Meeting |August 16, 2012 |

| |&:00 AM |

| |St Luke’s Emerson Auditorium |

| |222 N Woods Mill Road |

| |Chesterfield, MO 63017 |

| Meeting called to order by: |Barbara Fontaine, CPC |Type of meeting: Regular Chapter meeting | |

| Minutes Taken By: |Barbara Fontaine CPC | | |

| Board Members Present: |Betsy Miller, Vice President; Ileana Stewart, Treasurer; Barbara Fontaine, Secretary, |

| |Rhonda Bottoms, Member Development |

| Board Members Absent: |Debbie Flieger, President (due to conflict with work schedule) |

| Speaker |The meeting began at 7 am with Barbara Fontaine introducing the morning’s program. We watched and coded a one |

| |hour telelvision show, ER. This was entertaining and a fun way to try to hurry and code the 14 different |

| |scenarios contained in the episode. The show coded was from Season One, Episode 2 and it lasted 46 minutes. The |

| |other 14 + minutes were taken in reviewing each scenario to make sure that we captured all of the diagnoses that |

| |were presented. All present agreed that this was fun and a lot harder than the thought it would be. There had |

| |been a baby in respiratory distress, a gaggle of German tourists with food poisoning, a man with chest pain who |

| |went on to develop cardiac arrest, A family in an MVA with crush injuries to the mom, a daughter with a lacerated |

| |spleen and a dad with a fractured leg and that didn’t even include the other driver who had a blood alcohol of 435|

| |and previous arrests for DUI. There were gun shot wounds TWICE to a liquor store owner, an old man with senile |

| |dementia and dehydration, a 65 year old male with left lower quadrant pain who was post op and eventually |

| |developed bleeding from a post op clot. Also a man who fell asleep on the beach at Lake Michigan and had at least|

| |a 2nd degree sunburn, a young lady with a rash on her bottom from poison ivy, an 86 year old woman with decreased |

| |vital signs, dehydration and respiratory failure and finally a vomiting bride with 200 guests at her reception, |

| |held at the same restaurant where the German Tourist acquired fool poisoning. All one code with many emesis |

| |basins! |

| |Barbara has purchased a set of ER DVDs and will have them for future meetings should we need a quick program. All|

| |agreed this was a fun way to practice diagnosis coding. |

| |The members in attendance for the full hour were awarded 1 CEU. |

| | |

| |Barbara announced that our next meeting will be September 20th at 6 pm and our speaker for that meeting is Karen |

| |Smiley who will bring us information on coding for an ASC. |

| Business Meeting | Member Development - Rhonda Bottoms, our Member Development officer welcomed everyone. She also told about our |

| |upcoming chapter elections and requested those present to consider running for office. She told how rewarding it |

| |is to help the chapter in this way and asked people to really give it some thought. Nominations will be held at |

| |the September meeting. |

| | |

| |Vice President - In the absence of our President, Debbie Flieger, due to a conflict with her employment, Vice |

| |President Betsy Miller asked the new members and recently certified members to stand for recognition. She also |

| |recognized the past presidents in attendance. President Debbie Flieger, in trying to encourage members to use the|

| |AAPC forums, had posted a question on the chapter forum again this month and Betsy asked how many knew the |

| |question and it’s answer. Those who knew this were awarded one Point for Education. A new question will be |

| |posted for September. Please go to our local chapter forum at to be eligible, |

| |Volunteers – Betsy thanked those members who volunteered tonight to greet people at the registration table. |

| | |

| |Member of the Year: Vice President Betsy also reminded those present to be sure and find a local chapter member |

| |that they would like to nominate for our chapter’s Member of the Year. The member who receives the most |

| |nominations from the chapter will be nominated to National for consideration as the AAPC Member of the Year. |

| | |

| |Chapter Tee Shirts: Tee shirts were again handed out to those who had ordered and paid for them. We still have |

| |more that need to be picked up. |

| | |

| |Community Service – Our community service project this month was collecting school supplies for Kingdom House in |

| |Saint Louis. These will really be appreciated. Thanks to all for helping with this project. |

| | |

| |Attendance Prizes were drawn – Winner of a $50 certificate for chapter bucks was Judith Cooper. $10 Chapter Bucks|

| |winners included: Mindy Powell, Mira Moore, Ileana Stewart, Nancy Baning, Tonya Donty, Jamie Montgomery, Cathleen |

| |Reinholt, Lydia Thomas, and John Schroeter. The 50/50 drawing was for $11.00 and it was won by Rhonda Bottoms. |

| | |

| |Meeting was adjourned. |

| |Next Meeting – August 20th, 2012 at 6 pm St. Luke’s Emerson Auditorium. |

SEPTEMBER CODING CHALLENGE

Maybe it’s because school is starting back, or maybe it’s because I-10 is still looming over us, but whatever the reason, Little Johnny is going to the gym and plans for a fantastic workout! This is not his first trip to the gym, as he has been working out weekly for well over one year – in other words, please “don’t try this at home” unless you have your physician and/or trainer’s permission!

Can you correctly name the muscles Little Johnny is targeting in his work out?

Boxer Sit-Ups (using an 8 pound medicine ball). Laying flat on his back with knees bent with the medicine ball in his hands and over his head, Little Johnny does a sit-up and tosses the ball to his partner who is standing at Little Johnny’s feet. The partner tosses the ball back to Little Johnny who then declines back to his starting position. This is repeated for 10 sit-ups. Little Johnny uses his core to keep him upright, but what major muscles is he using when he throws the ball to his partner? ________ and ______. While catching the ball, name two abdominal muscles keeps Little Johnny up: _____, _____, _____. At the conclusion of the 10 sit-ups, the partner moves to the side, where Little Johnny then tosses the ball to the side to the partner and reclines back to the starting (flat) position. This is repeated 10 times per side. During the sit-up, Little Johnny uses his _________ muscle to raise and lower himself with help from his ___________, and while tossing and catching from the side, the main muscles used are the ______ and __________ with help from the ___________.

Little Johnny takes a water break before starting his next exercise – The Pyramid!

For 15 seconds, Little Johnny uses 12 pound weights for shoulder presses, then for 30 seconds, he must do Burpies, which is putting both hands on the floor, kick his legs out to a push up position, swing his legs back to his hands, stand up and jump reaching for the ceiling. Little Johnny is working his ________ muscles during the shoulder presses, and his ________, _________, _________, _______ and _________ during the Burpies. Now it’s time for planking! For 45 seconds, Little Johnny is holds a push up position, staying motionless. Little Johnny has a strong ______, which is primarily made of the ______________, ____________, _____________ and ___________.

The last exercise in this pyramid is 60 seconds of jump squats. Little Johnny squats, touching the floor, and then jumps up with his hands in the air. He lands into the squat position and jumps up again. This is primarily working his _____, __________ and ________. After a 30 second rest, it’s time to start again, except in reverse order!

Although Little Johnny is tired, he knows he is making progress toward his goal of staying fit and active!

Some terms can be used more than once:

Calves Internal Oblique

Chest Pectoralis Major

Core Quads

Deltoid Rectus Abdominus

External Oblique Transverse Abdominus

Hamstrings Triceps

Hip Flexors

Positive Thought for September

You are at the top when…

♣         You clearly understand that failure is an event, not a person, that yesterday ended last night, and today is your brand new day.

♣         You have made friends with your past, are focused on the present, and optimistic about your future.

♣         You know that success doesn't make you and failure doesn't break you.

♣         You are filled with faith, hope and love; and live without anger, greed, guilt, envy or thoughts of revenge.

♣         You are mature enough to delay gratification and shift your focus from your rights to your responsibilities.

♣         You know that failure to stand for what is morally right is the prelude to being the victim of what is criminally wrong.

♣         You have made friends of your adversaries, and have gained the love and respect of those who know you best.

♣         You understand that others can give you pleasure, but genuine happiness comes when you do things for others.

♣         You are pleasant to the grouch, courteous to the rude and generous to the needy.

♣         You love the unlovable, give hope to the hopeless, friendship to the friendless and encouragement to the discouraged.

♣         You can look back in forgiveness, forward in hope, down in compassion and up with gratitude.
