CALL FOR SELF-NOMINATION2020 UNEP FI Banking Board ElectionFollowing the adoption of the Proposal for Delivering on the Principles for Responsible Banking by the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Banking Membership, UNEP FI invites eligible Members Banks to self-nominate for a position on the new Banking Board. Mandate of the Banking Board The UNEP FI Banking Board is the new governance body for the UNEP FI Banking Membership and the Principles for Responsible Banking, the common framework and commitment banking institutions are required to sign in order to become a UNEP FI member. The Banking Board oversees the effective implementation of the Principles for Responsible Banking and the Banking Membership’s contribution to the achievement of UNEP FI’s overall strategic objective. The Banking Board mandate oversees: UNEP FI’s Banking Strategy and Workplan, within the overall strategic parameters set by the Global Steering Committee and with due consideration of the inputs provided by the Civil Society Advisory Body.The Banking Budget based on proposal by the UNEP FI Secretariat.The biennial report on the collective progress of all Signatories, carried out by the UNEP FI Secretariat.The biennial review of the Principles for Responsible Banking and their Framework Documents (Key Steps to be Implemented by Signatories and Reporting and Self-Assessment Template), with due consideration of the inputs provided by the Civil Society Advisory Body and after consultation with Member Banks.The engagement with and review of the signatory status of banking institutions that have been identified by the Secretariat as not being in line with their commitments under the Principles for Responsible Banking.For detailed information on the Banking Board’s mandate, please refer to the Section 1.1 of the UNEP FI Banking Governance FrameworkComposition The Banking Board consists of twelve seats: eleven seats for representatives from Member Banks that are Signatories to the Principles for Responsible Banking and one seat for a representative of the United Nations. The eleven positions for representatives from Member Banks are spread across all world regions of UNEP FI Member Banks and are designed to strike a balance between proportionality and broad geographic representation of the UNEP FI Banking Membership and Signatories. Please refer to the Annex of this document for the classification of UNEP FI Member Banks’ countries by regions. The positions are available for 2.5, 3.5 or 4.5-year terms spanning from September 2020 to December 2022, 2023 and 2024 respectively. The staggered lengths of the mandates were introduced to allow for continuity in the Banking Board. (If for a region there are no self-nominations, the seat will be opened for self-nomination for candidates from all world regions).Have a strong track record of implementing and promoting sustainable banking practices. Are empowered and committed to devote the necessary time and effort for the execution of their roles and responsibilities as members of the Banking Board. This includes being able to attend at least one in-person meeting per year and cover the costs related to attendance. Are senior representatives of their institution, who have approval to represent their institution, authority to make the decisions required as part of their role as Banking Board member and the ability to mobilize support within their institutions.Banking Board membership is a personal attribution in representation of UNEP FI Member Banks and cannot be alternated or delegated except in special circumstances. Membership of the Banking Board therefore involves a commitment of members’ time and includes some travel, the costs of which will not be covered by UNEP FI. If a Banking Board member fails to attend three scheduled meetings without advance notice to the Secretariat and Co-Chairs or if a Banking Board member attends less than 60% of Banking Board meetings in any given year, the Banking Board member will lose his/her seat in the absence of extenuating circumstances. The Banking Board is expected to meet by video/conference call at least once a quarter and in-person at least once a year. Banking Board members do not represent UNEP. Please carefully review Section 1 of the UNEP FI Banking Governance Framework, which describes the role and responsibilities of the Banking Board and outlines the profile, requirements and nomination/election procedures for Banking Board members. Notes on the self-nomination & election processes1. Self-nominations should be completed and sent to the Secretariat by Friday 10 July 2020 Self-nominations should be made using the official form (enclosed). Only Part I is required at this stage of the process.The Secretariat will contact all self-nominees by 17 July 2020, informing them about the total number of nominations received for the respective position. At this stage, any self-nominee who does not wish to stand for election anymore may withdraw in confidence. Confirmed self-nominees are considered candidates.Following the confirmation, all candidates are required to complete the full self-nomination form (i.e. including PART II), including a recorded video statement, by Friday 24 July 2020.All completed self-nomination forms (including the video motivation), excepting contact information, will be circulated to the full UNEP FI membership together with a voting form. 2. Elections will take place from 29 July 2020 to 14 August 2020Each UNEP FI banking member will have one vote to cast per position. The candidates with the most votes will take the positions. The results of the election will be announced to all members on 19 August 2020.
