ADVANCED PLACEMENT UNITED STATES HISTORY COURSE SYLLABUS

Become an “apprentice historian”

I. DESCRIPTION: Advanced Placement United States History (APUSH) is designed to provide equity and assist qualified students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the content material in U.S. history, with a special emphasis on preparing students for the College Board exam in May. This course is intended for highly motivated students that wish to complete studies in the secondary school equivalent to an introductory college level course in this field.

II. MATERIALS: TEXT: The American Pageant (13th Ed.) Houghton Mifflin Co. New York, NY 2006

Students will be expected to provide their own paper, writing utensils, and notebook(s).

• analyze important consequences of American industrial growth

• identify major efforts to reform American society and politics in the Progressive Era.

• explain America’s evolving relationship with the world at the turn of the 20th century.

• analyze the origins and impact of U.S. involvement in World War I.

• identify key developments in the aftermath of World War I.

• analyze the causes and consequences of the Great Depression.

• describe the New Deal as a response to the depression and compare ways governmental programs aided those in need.

• identify the origins, major developments, and the domestic impact of World War II, especially the growth of the federal government.

• analyze the domestic and international impact of the Cold War on the United States.

• explain the impact of technological developments and economic growth on the United States, 1945-1975.

• identify dimensions of the Civil Rights movement, 1945-1970.

• describe and assess the impact of political developments between 1945 and 1970.

• analyze the impact of social change movements and organizations of the 1960’s.

• describe changes in national politics since 1968.
