No Diversity in the Oscars If celebrities didn’t speak out on this year lack of diversity in the Oscars two years in a row would it still be a problem that no people of color were nominated? This past week celebrities like Jada Pinkett-Smith and Spike Lee has boycotted the Oscars for the lack of diversity among this year’s nominees. There are mix reviews upon why there are no people of color that have been nominated for several great movies and roles portrayed by African American, but one thing is for certain race is still a big part of our society that we’re afraid to acknowledge. On Jan 14 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science has a list of 23 producers for eight of the movies that came out for best picture of the year, seven of them were women out of the 23. 17 individuals are nominated with four of them being women and no racial input when there were several films that had black individual or group mates from Straight out of Compton, Creed, Selma and many more. This isn’t the first time that the Academy has problem with having more minorities on the panel, back in the 50’s Variety Magazine published an article on how the Academy doesn’t have enough black actors and roles for minorities. In the 80’s the Academy was called out for “white list” which was a list of movie companies that excluded black actors from certain roles either behind the camera or in front of the camera.Same thing happen in the early 90’s were the Academy women didn’t get enough starring acting roles there was a study that showed out of 207 movies that were film-featured movies 11 of them went to women. That’s only 5.3%, later that year it didn’t show any increase only a slight increase of more women getting more featured film roles than men. Many top actors and actress of color are making a bold stand against an all-white Oscar fair this time around, actors and actresses like Will and Jada ,Spike Lee, Tyrese and many more have petition to boycott the Oscars for the lack of diversity two years running. Some have made statements about why they won’t be attending the Oscars this year actor Will Smith said “he is uncomfortable” with the situation. This isn’t just about the black community or specifically about race, it’s about everybody having and equal opportunity and to be represented as so. Acknowledging that every race is very talented in its own way and it shouldn’t be one dominating race or group of people getting all the credit when the same group of people deserves the same amount of credit as them. ................
