I. Warm Up

Talk about states and where Alex (North Carolina) and Aubrey (California) are from. Discuss the American flag and symbols. Bring U.S. coins and bills to pass around the class, and describe the importance of the symbols and figures on each piece of currency.

II. Presentation of New Material

Bring USA maps for visual support and to put our country’s size into perspective. Present a flipchart of American and British variants to show differences in vocabulary.

e.g. apartment / flat

American / British

III. Application

Play music from USA – Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash – to present the sounds and rhythm of country music. Show short video clip Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving which emphasizes the gathering of family members to celebrate their family and giving thanks. Discuss differences in American and British vocabulary, and how diverse the culture of America really is. (Melting pot)

IV. Summary

Recap on the lesson and information that we presented. Include a question-answer time for students to formulate their questions about our culture and America as a whole.
