Is there a cap on admissions an intern or resident can have?

Each intern caps at 10 patients on general floor rotations, and 15 for well baby. Each resident caps at 6 patients on PICU. In 2016, Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital introduced a Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine Department so there is a pediatric hospitalist in-house 24/7. Our floor teams admit everyday on a drip system allowing each team time to work between admissions.

 

Are there any call free months?

First year-

•         2 months Call Free

•         3 months Reserve (back-up call if someone is unable to come to their shift)

•         3 months (NICU, MDA & LBJ Floor) with approximately one week of nights

•         3 floor months with approximately one week of nights

Second year-

•         1 month Call Free

•         1 Jeopardy month (2-3 scheduled cross-cover calls)

•         2 months Reserve (back-up call if someone is unable to come to their shift)

•         4-5 months of rotations (NICU, MDA, PICU, Floor) with approximately one week of nights or call.

Third year-

•         3 months Call Free

•         3 months Reserve

•         1 month Jeopardy

•         1 month Float (all night shifts)

•         4 months of rotations (NICU, PICU, Floor) with approximately one week of nights or call.

What pediatric fellowships are available at UT?

Pulmonary, critical care, neonatology, genetics, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, infectious disease, neurology, hematology & oncology, nephrology, child abuse and protection, emergency medicine, adolescent medicine.

Are there opportunities for research?

There are several opportunities depending on field of interest, including clinical and bench research. There are several top research facilities at UT including Institute for Molecular Medicine, UT School of Public Health, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the UT Medical School. Some of a resident’s elective can be allotted to research.

Does this program allow conference/CME time?

Up to 5 days annually

What do most graduating residents do after residency?

Last year’s graduation class stats:

General/Academics: 50%

Hospitalists: 5%

Subspecialists/fellowships: 45% Neonatology, Hospital Medicine, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric Rheumatology, and Urgent Care

How much vacation time is allowed?

• 3 weeks vacation per contract year + 5 days CME time

How much maternity/paternity leave is available?

Under the Family Medical Leave Act you may take up to 3 months off (extra can be given if approved by our department). Only vacation and sick days are paid. Sick leave accumulates at one day per month worked. Any time taken past your total nine weeks of vacation during the three year residency must be made up.

What is the starting salary?

The program maintains salaries competitive with other Residency programs with similar cost of living.
