Lateral Transfer Aids and Repositioning Devices

(Air Assisted, Friction Reducing, Manual and Powered, Transfer Boards)

Many devices are available for accomplishing lateral transfers as well as repositioning a patient in a bed or a chair. Friction reducing devices are often constructed of smooth synthetic fabrics. These facilitate the lateral transfer or repositioning of patients that can offer limited or no assistance. The reduction of forces required to execute the transfer minimize biomechanical loading of the caregiver’s arms and back. Properly designed handles and pull straps can improve the caregivers’ grasp and reduce forward reach during transfers. Air-assisted devices are specialty transfer mattresses installed beneath dependent patients onto which a portable air supply is attached that inflates the mattress. Air flows through perforations in the underside of the mattress, reducing the forces required to execute a lateral transfer. Other devices include transfer boards and powered transfer devices. There are also devices for dependency and wheelchairs that will keep that patient from sliding.

Homecare/Long Term Care Beds

Med/Surg Beds

This guide is a resource to assist you in choosing the type of bed you need for your particular area of care. It is by no means a complete list. You should do your own research and contact manufacturers for current models and specifications as they may have changed since our last update.

Beds can be purchased in many different configurations. Frames, various siderail configurations, headboards, footboards, mattresses and many accessories can be purchased separately or together depending upon your needs. Specifications included are for the widest and longest sizes available, for other height and width options see the manufacturers’ web sites.

We have not addressed the various types of mattresses available in the marketplace, but depending upon your patient’s needs, you can get standard, foam, and specialty surfaces (such as air-assisted pressure relief or treatment surfaces). Some of these mattress options also feature anti-microbial covers. It is important to remember that all beds have different deck dimensions and that not all mattresses fit all beds. Please consult the manufacturer to assure that you are using the correct size mattress for your bed.

Available options can include:

• Exit alarm

• Foot board at end of frame to keep patient from sliding down

• Ability to adjust the height of the bed to a comfortable and safe working position for the caregiver as well as to lower the bed to the floor for patients at risk for falls.

• Power assist to use as transport device

• Scale

• Turn assist

• Chair position
