ABMS AND BOARD C E RT I F I C AT I O N

ABMS serves the public and the medical profession as a leader in the board certification and continuing professional development of medical specialists.

Who we are

We are a national organization of 24 specialty medical boards that assesses the knowledge, skills, and judgment of physicians according to the standards of practice set by the profession, and grants board certification to those meeting and remaining current with the requirements.

What we do

? Set standards for quality and practice that emphasize professionalism, patient safety, and performance improvement

? Conduct assessments to verify a physician's knowledge, skills, and judgment in a medical specialty and inform professional development activities

? Build relationships with physicians, medical educators, hospitals and health systems, credentialing professionals, thought leaders, policymakers, and payers to encourage systematic improvements

? Serve the public by providing board certification information to help professionals and patients identify board certified physicians

more than

880,000 physicians

Why

it's important

Board certification represents physicians' highest professional credential. It is a key component of the patient-physician relationship. Patients trust the medical profession to establish and maintain the standards of practice by which physicians are certified and assessed. By being board certified, physicians show they meet those standards and demonstrate that they have the specialized knowledge and clinical judgment to provide safe, quality patient care.

ABMS BOARD C E RT I F I C AT I O N AND LICENSURE

Certification by an ABMS Member Board is a distinct process from licensure; and serves the important purpose of identifying for the public, state licensure agencies and employers, those individuals who successfully meet the standards of practice set by the profession for the specialty.

LICENSURE

Mandatory credential granted by a state providing legal permission to practice medicine

Requires medical degree, minimum one-year internship training, and passing an exam

BOARD CERTIFICATION

Voluntary credential granted by an ABMS Member Board confirming a physician's advanced knowledge, training, and skills in a specialty or subspecialty Requires medical degree, medical license, 3 to 7 years residency/fellowship training, program director attestation, and passing a rigorous exam. It involves a continuing process of professional assessment and learning to support improvements in patient care quality, safety, outcomes, and experiences.

Specialists first earn board certification when they achieve expertise in a medical specialty or subspecialty that meets ABMS Member Board requirements. Afterward, they demonstrate their continuing knowledge by participating in ongoing programs to evaluate and assess their practice. The results serve as a starting point for further learning and improvement.
