▪ VA Medical Center Announcements

▪ 9th Annual Southern Illinois Meth and Other Drugs Conference – March 20-21, 2012 at John A. Logan College. Conference registration is now open on the website at jalc.edu/cbi and search under the “What’s Happening” section. Conference is free, but lunch will be on your own the first day of the conference. There will be several breakout sessions targeted toward those who serve the veteran population this year.

▪ Foundations of Faith Community/Parish Nursing – March 1st, 2nd & 3rd and March 16th & 17th, 2012 at John A. Logan College. Faith Community Nursing, also called Parish Nursing, is a specialized area of professional nursing practice focusing on the promotion of health and wholeness within the context of the values and practices of a faith community. The target audience is professional registered nurses (current RN licensure required). Other professionals who are interested in participating in a Health Ministry program under the direction of a Faith Community Nurse can attend with the consent of the course director. Fee is $200. ▪ “From Our Hearts to Yours” Toiletry Drive – During the month of February, the F/W Healthy Senior Action Team will be collecting donation of toiletry items to be distributed to six area food pantry’s. Donations are accepted at any of the following locations: Addus Adult Day Center in Marion, Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Marion, Dollar General Store in Marion, Hospice of Southern Illinois in Marion, Shawnee Alliance for Seniors in Carterville, VNA-Tip in Benton & Marion, and the Williamson County Programs on Aging in Herrin. All items will be picked up on March 5, 2012.

▪ School Immunization Walk-In Clinics – Franklin/Williamson Bi-County Health Department is offering immunization walk-in clinics at both Health Department locations on April 23-27, 2012 and every Wednesday in June, July and August. ▪ Rides Mass Transit will open their Williamson County Operations Center in Marion the end of March.

▪ Take Charge of Your Health: Live Well, Be Well Workshops – The series of six workshops will help you discover practical ways to deal with pain, learn better nutrition and exercise choices, and provide the support you need to feel better. This six-week workshop is free and will be offered at the First Baptist Church in Carterville starting February 20 – April 9, from 9 – 11 a.m. (No Class on March 26). Action Team Updates:

▪ Healthy Lifestyles

➢ Planning is under way for the Community Leaders Forum for Franklin and Williamson counties. The event will be by invitation only and will be held on October 25, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. at John A. Logan College. The goal of the forum is to educate and encourage decision makers in the community to be mindful of PSE (Policy, System & Environmental) changes to help resident’s live healthier lives. A planning meeting is scheduled for February 29th.

➢ SIU, SIH to Study Lung Cancer Disparity – A grant award funded by the American Cancer Society has awarded nearly $250,000 to SIU School of Medicine, Southern Illinois Healthcare Cancer Institute, and the Illinois State Cancer Registry. Together they will work on a project entitled: “Collaboration to Reduce Lung Cancer Disparities in Southern Illinois Delta.” The SIH Cancer Institute is also an affiliate of the SIU School of Medicine Simmons Cancer Institute. The project will focus on the 16 southernmost counties of Illinois.

➢ CATCH – One new school has been added to the list of CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) schools in the region. Akin Community Consolidated Elementary School in Franklin County.

➢ On Friday March 30, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., throughout Southern Illinois, several organizations will be handing out free colon cancer take home tests for community members interested in taking the first step in preventing cancer. Volunteers will be on hand to distribute these tests in a “drive-thru” fashion, so that interested parties will not have to leave their vehicles. ▪ Healthy Seniors

➢ New Co-Chairs of the Healthy Seniors Action Team were announced: Jane Rogers of UMWA Retirement Funds and Jennifer Vinyard of Hospice of Southern Illinois.

➢ Planning continues for the Senior Fun Fest to be held on May 11, 2012 at John A. Logan College. This year’s theme is: “Seniors of the Caribbean.” Registration letters for sponsorships as well as vendors have been mailed.

➢ Toiletry Drive – The action team is currently working on this project during the month of February. (See above in announcement section for more information.

➢ Anyone interested in being involved with the Healthy Seniors Action Team is to call Jane Rogers at UMWA Retirement Funds at (618) 942-2736 or Jennifer Vinyard of Hospice of Southern Illinois at (618) 997-3030.

➢ The next Healthy Seniors Action Team meeting is scheduled directly after today’s meeting at 1 p.m.

▪ Access To Care

➢ The combined group of the F/WHCC and JCHCC Access To Care Action Team has been focusing their efforts on Oral Health concerns. Bright Smiles Training was held in the fall with 29 medical personnel trained on fluoride/varnishing treatments as well as the enhanced referral program.

➢ Work continues with Southern Illinois Healthcare partnering with Shawnee Health Service and SIU Community Dental Center on Oral Health issues. Currently in the process of analyzing the data for 2011.

➢ BRIERS – Blood Related Illness Enhanced Referral Service – In the process of training primary care physicians and identifying physicians who will take these patients as their primary care physician.

➢ Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) Initiative – Southern Illinois Healthcare is partnering with Land of Lincoln Legal Services on a referral system for patients to get the needed legal services they need to enhance their quality of life.

Agency Presentation: Diane Goffinet, Senior Staff Attorney from Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, Inc. gave this month’s agency presentation.

Medical Legal Partnership of Southern Illinois – MLPSI is a collaborative effort between Southern Illinois Healthcare and Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation to assist patients in improving their health by alleviating the legal stressors in their lives. This is done by attorneys and paralegals partnering with the person’s health care provider to find real solutions to legal problems. Currently, MLPSI is in its 10th year and has provided legal assistance to over 1,000 southern Illinois patients.

Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation provides free legal help to low-income people in 65 counties in central and southern Illinois. There are five regional offices located in Alton, Carbondale, Champaign, East St. Louis, and Springfield as well as three satellite offices in Decatur, Charleston, and Mt. Vernon. There is also a Legal Advice and Referral Center (LARC) that takes calls from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Types of Cases Handled:

• Housing – evictions, foreclosures, lock-outs, utility shut-offs, contract for deed problems or trouble getting the landlord or housing authority to make repairs.

• Family – cases for victims of domestic violence, such as orders of protection and divorce; custody cases when the parent who has been child’s caretaker is in danger of losing custody; and some divorces. In some areas, we offer self-help clinics on divorce.

• Consumer – debt collection, repossession, garnishments, home improvement problems, and consumer fraud.

• Public Benefits and Health – TANF, SSI, General Assistance, Food Stamps, or Medicaid.

• Other Services for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons – Wills and powers of attorney for persons age 60 and over and persons who are HIV positive. Nursing home quality of care issues. (in some counties)

• Education – cases for children with disabilities and for wards of DCFS.

Types of Services Provided:

• Services range from telephone advice or brief service, to representation in court or at administrative hearings. The type of service provided depends on the legal problem, merits of the case, and staff availability.

Cases NOT handled:

• Criminal cases, including traffic cases.

• Personal injury cases and other cases where you could pay for a private attorney out of the judgment if you won.

• Probate matters.

• Cannot handle cases against people who are or have been clients of Land of Lincoln. This is called a conflict of interest.

How to Apply for Services:

• To apply for services, the person who needs legal help should call the Legal Advice and Referral Center (LARC) at 1-877-342-7891 anytime between 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Victims of domestic violence and persons age 60 and over should call the regional office that serves the county in which the caller lives. The person you speak to at the regional office or LARC will first determine if you are eligible for services.
