Native Americans Tackle Tobacco Abuse at New Mexico Gathering

Portland, Oregon—American Indian and Alaska Native tobacco abuse prevention advocates will gather in New Mexico this Spring to engage in four days of intensive workshops on tobacco use in Indian Country. The National Native Leadership Institute on Tobacco will take place April 9 – 12, 2007 at the Albuquerque Hilton in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Leadership Institute evolved from the National Native Conference on Tobacco Use organized and sponsored annually by the National Tribal Tobacco Prevention Network (NTTPN). Over 300 participants attended the 2005 conference representing more than 95 tribes, villages, and tribal organizations, making this event the largest annual gathering of American Indian affiliates and advocates of tobacco abuse prevention in Indian Country.

The Leadership Institute will provide in-depth instruction and interactive group exercises illuminating tobacco prevention and education strategies specific to Native communities. Successful programs utilizing best and promising practices will be showcased throughout the event.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, thirty-three percent of adult American Indians and Alaska Natives are smokers. This is the highest rate of commercial tobacco use among every age, ethnic, and gender category in the U.S. You can improve the wellness of American Indian and Alaska Native people by attending the National Native Leadership Institute on Tobacco and by getting involved in the National Tribal Tobacco Prevention Network.
