Diabetes: Everyone is in the Picture

ADA’s 9th Annual Gala will educate and celebrate

MINNEAPOLIS, April 1 2008 - The 9th Annual American Diabetes Association Gala will be held on Saturday, May 17th, 2008, at the St. Paul RiverCentre. This black-tie event will bring focus on the mission of the American Diabetes Association by emphasizing the fact that everyone is impacted by diabetes in some way. It is an alarming fact that 1 in 3 children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime, however Type 2 Diabetes is able to be prevented or delayed by 58% through lifestyle changes alone.

Supporting the idea to educate the general public and celebrate generosity, the Gala will honor four individuals from the Minnesota community who have demonstrated the key cornerstones of the ADA mission – Cure, Care, and Commitment.

The Cure Award will be given to Robert A. Rizza, MD. a past president of ADA’s Minnesota Chapter, as well as a Professor of Medicine and Director for Research at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Rizza has been a dedicated advocate of the ADA’s mission and an active leader within the Association for nearly 20 years. He is being recognized for his years of commitment through leadership, generosity, and involvement in ADA as well as the community.

Bradley J. Enegren, Vice President and General Manager of Diabetes Research and Development at Medtronic Inc., will be presented with the Care Award. Mr. Enegren efforts have contributed to developing vital treatments that are improving the lives of patients with diabetes.
