Blood Glucose Monitoring Devices and Strips

General Guidance:

Strips: The Precision Q.I.D. strip is listed by name on the DoD Basic Core Formulary (BCF). DoD Health Affairs’ “Policy for Basic Core Formulary and Incentive Price Agreement,” dated 27 April 1998 states, in relevant part, “The BCF...contains the minimum drugs, which each full service pharmacy must have on its formulary.... Items on the BCF are first line agents that are the preferred choice of therapy. Other agents may be added to the MTF formulary... through the local Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee process.”

The “Basic Core Formulary Quick Reference Guide”, updated quarterly, states that Precision Q.I.D. strips are listed on the basic core formulary. All DoD MTF’s must supply these when prescribed. It also states that MTFs are not precluded from listing additional test strips on their formularies.

DoD Health Affairs Policy and Quick Reference Guide may be found on the Pharmacoeconomic website at pec.ha.osd.mil/.

Precision Q.I.D. Strips are not interchangeable with other monitoring devices.

Using the system requires the following steps:

▪ Calibrating the monitor whenever new box of strips is started.

▪ Measuring blood glucose through a two step process.

▪ Checking the functioning of the system utilizing concurrent laboratory value and finger stick value or through the use of MediSense Glucose Control Solutions.

Monitoring Devices: The availability and mechanism for obtaining blood glucose monitoring devices varies at each military treatment facility. The establishment of the best mechanism and availability of monitoring devices at your facility should be coordinated through appropriate supply channels and pharmacy.

The Precision Q.I.D. Blood Glucose Monitoring Device allows patients to store their blood glucose level readings on a memory chip in the device. This information can then be downloaded to a healthcare provider's computer and viewed utilizing manufacturer supplied software. Further information on the capabilities of the Precision Q.I.D. Blood Glucose Monitoring Device should be directed to your local diabetes educator or Abbott Sales Representative.
