What is HeartCode BLS? And how do I get certified?

HeartCode BLS is an interactive self-directed learning program which completes all cognitive requirements for the American Heart Association Healthcare Provider course.

Course completion consists of two separate elements: completing the computer-based cognitive portion and demonstrating skills to a certified AHA BLS Instructor or using a voice assisted manikin system.

To receive your AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider card, just follow these three easy steps:

3a

Successfully complete the required skills tests administered by an AHA BLS instructor (bring your printed Part 1 certificate).

3b

OR

Successfully complete Part 2 of HeartCode BLS using a voice assisted manikin system.

What do I need to do to complete Part 1? - about the Home page

What are the Patient Scenarios? - about the steps in the scenarios

When you have logged into HeartCode BLS on your computer and have read the Welcome page, you will see the Home page.

On the Home page you can always see how close you are to completing HeartCode BLS Part 1. Every time you successfully complete a section, that section is checked off with a green check mark.

When you reach Step 4 (all previous sections are checked off), you are ready to print your HeartCode BLS Part 1 Completion Certificate!

HeartCode BLS Part 1 includes:

Video lessons that take you through the algorithms and skills.

An introduction case to help you become comfortable with the use of the program.

Realistic patient cases that allow you to interact with the program to assess the patient, formulate a treatment plan based on the BLS algorithm, and effect treatment.

4

A multiple choice quiz that tests your knowledge of Basic Life Support.

1. The actual Patient Scenarios, where you help a victim:

Control the rescuers' actions by clicking on the different menu selections.

Pause the simulation, if needed.

When you have obtained the AED, you can operate it from here.

2. The Self-Assessment Screen, where you evaluate your own performance:

If you click on the green mark, your performance will count towards certification.

If you click on the red mark, your performance will be regarded as practice and you can try again.

3. The Debriefing Screen, where a log of your actions is combined with intelligent feedback:

The score tells you if you have passed the scenario or not.

The debriefing tells you what happened in the scenario.

When you are done, click here to either replay the scenario, or continue with the program. 5
