Sterile ProcessingThe Dallas College- El Centro Campus Sterile Processing program is a 96-hour curriculum designed for students to prepare to take the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) exam. Once a student has taken and successfully completed the CBSPD exam their certification is valid for a period of five years. The CBSPD's Technician certification program is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), which is the accrediting body for the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE).Acceptance to the Sterile Processing program is based on successful completion of your application. Limited seating is available; once the class is full, the Continuing Education office will not accept packets until the next available semester is open.This information packet contains specific application guidelines and requirements. Navy colored medical scrub shirtNavy colored medical scrub pantGENERAL INFORMATIONThe Dallas College El Centro Campus Sterile Processing program accepts approximately 12 students each Fall and Spring semester. Scrubbing up before a surgery or a procedure, the doctor takes great care to assure their hands and arms are as clean and sterile as possible. The same care goes into the equipment and tools used by the doctors. The responsibilities of a sterile processing technician are to clean, disinfect, sterilize, and perform inventory management on medical surgical instruments regardless of the setting. Sterile Processing technicians are also responsible for setting up operating room trays while caring for and maintaining all surgical instruments.The Sterile Processing program consists of three courses that are equivalent to 216 hours. Upon approval to the program, the applicant must register for courses SRGT 2000, SRGT 1091, and SRGT 1060. The first course Sterile Processing I (SRGT 2000) consists of 24 hours. The second course Sterile Processing Lab (SRGT 1091) consists of 72 hours. The third course SRGT 1060 consists of 120 hours of clinical. The applicant will receive a certificate of completion of the program at the end of the third course upon successful completion of all courses. These courses will provide the applicant with the knowledge and skills required by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD). The applicant MUST pass the CBSPD's Technician exam offered by CBSPD in order to be a certified Sterile Processing Technician.
