TO PATIENTS WHO HAVE HAD TO BE PRE-MEDICATED BEFORE THEIR DENTAL APPOINTMENTS

The American Heart Association recently released new guidelines regarding the necessity for antibiotic pre-medication prior to dental treatment (April 2007). Our office, in accordance with recommendations from the American Dental Association has always upheld these recommendations for the safety of our patients. It is the new recommendation that pre-medication will only be required prior to your dental appointment if you have been diagnosed with any of the following conditions:

1. Prosthetic cardiac valve

2. Previous infective endocarditis

3. Congenital heart disease (CHD)

a. Unrepaired cyanotic CHD, including palliative shunts and conduits

b. Completely repaired heart defect with prosthetic material or device,

whether placed by surgery or by catheter intervention, during the first

six months after the procedure

c. Repaired CHD with residual defects at the site of a prosthetic patch or

prosthetic device (Which inhibit endothelialization)

d. Cardiac transplantation recipients who develop valvulopathy

Except for the conditions listed above, antibiotic prophylaxis is NO LONGER RECOMMENDED for any other form of Congenital Heart Defect.

Please consider that while we will no longer enforce pre-medication except in the above circumstance, your personal physician may desire for you to continue. It is suggested that a personal consultation with your physician be made. In the event your physician requests your continued use of an antibiotic pre-medication for any reason outside of the aforementioned guidelines, this will become your responsibility. Should you fail to take your medication prior to an appointment, we can issue you the usual regimen for a fee. Should you choose to cancel an appointment without proper notification; a cancellation charge will be assessed.

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has not changed their pre-medication recommendations. If you have any artificial joints, pins or plates, we will continue to uphold their recommendation.

Thank you for your compliance with the new American Heart Association ruling.

Thank you,

Dr. Jason Campbell, Dr. Rick Farnsworth and Staff
