The HRD/TCM Common Reading Program integrates both academic and student development goals for undergraduate students.? A common reader is introduced in specified courses, encouraging students’ deep thinking about important issues and concerns. Student activities and programs related to the reader are an integral part of encouraging students to engage actively with the each other and to connect academic learning to life experiences and offers students opportunities to read and interact with some of the world's leading voices.? As part of the Common Reading Program, HRD/TCM?students will read a powerful Common Reading book related to the year's theme. Students will discuss the book and explore the theme in specified classes encouraging multiple, sustained conversations as they pass together through the academic year.? The goal of the Common Reading Program is to show its participants how to approach issues they may have thought were beyond themselves, as well as the power of people working together.? The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of a Common Reading Program on the social justice attitudes and critical thinking skills among HRD/TCM students at Texas A&M University.?Nurturing, Investing, and Advocating (NIA): Increasing the Recruitment, Retention, and Graduation Rates of African Americans in Human Resource Development.??As a land grant institution of higher education, Texas A&M has historically struggled to increase its enrollment and retention of African American students, especially at the undergraduate level. The university educates over 68,000 students. 53,000 of those students are undergraduates. 63% are European American, while 22.6% are Latin Americans. 6.3% are Asian or Asian American, and 3.1% are African American. The percentage of African Americans attending and persisting at Texas A&M has consistently been extremely low. Project Nurture, Interact, Advocate (NIA) is poised to address this need by increasing the enrollment and persistence of African American undergraduate students in Human Resource Development (HRD) at Texas A&M University.? The purpose of this project is to increase the enrollment and graduation rates of African American students in HRD, in the College of Education, through the implementation of a race, identity and social equity initiative.?Study Abroad Experiences:? Is There a Symbiotic Relationship for High School and College Students?? Research suggests that a teen’s world will expand exponentially with international education.? Study abroad can be the beginning of a lifelong journey of global understanding and cultural knowledge.? Learning to think in another language is a core educational experience for global success, as is the development of imagination and critical thinking skills that come from international experience. Travel is the key to global knowledge—and forming connections, friendships, and networks is the key to utilizing that global knowledge on a daily basis.? Benefits may include communication skills, maturity, languages, autonomy, the ability to figure out new situations, independent thinking, networking skills and making friends, and transforming into a global citizen.? It has been demonstrated that life skills learned while studying abroad transfer well to college and the workplace.? The purpose of this research is to investigate the cross-cultural awareness and integrated worldview of high school students who travel on study abroad experiences with college students.PRESENTATIONSInvited33.
