Dear DCPS Community,

As Chancellor of DC Public Schools (DCPS), I

have the pleasure of engaging with students,

staf f, families, communit y advocates, and

District leaders ever y day. I am always energized

by the immense pride that members of the DCPS

communit y share. It is that pride that is carr ying

us through the challenges of the COVID-19

pandemic. It is that pride that at tracts families

and educators to DCPS and drives our progress

as one of the nation¡¯s fastest improving urban

school districts.

In School Year 2 019 -2 0 2 0, DCPS proudly enrolled

more than 5 0, 0 0 0 students for the first time

since 2 0 0 6. I am grateful that more families trust

DCPS to provide their children with rigorous and

joy ful learning experiences. As we celebrate the

scholars we ser ve across the district ,

we honor the generations of students, families,

and educators who studied in our classrooms,

taught in our schools, and crossed our

graduation stages.

Our DCPS Legacy is grounded in the tireless

ef for ts of our school communities, the endless

belief in the potential of our students, and the

incredible power of our district. From Principal

Tukeva, the founder of Columbia Heights

Education Campus ( Ward 1) who is inspiring

the nex t generation of educators, to Samiyah, a

third-generation Nalle Elementar y School ( Ward

7) student and future leader, ever y person in the

DCPS communit y leaves a mark that transforms

our district for the bet ter.

As we embark on a new school year, we are

proud to continue the DCPS Legacy by launching

the S tevens Early Learning Center ( Ward 2), the

first cit y wide, standalone early learning center

with Pre-K 3 and Pre-K4 classes, as well as a

child care center for infants and toddlers ages

0 to 3, and closing the digital divide through the

Empowered Learner ¡¯s Initiative (ELi), a threeyear investment in technology led by Mayor

Bowser. S tudents, staf f, families, communit y

advocates, and District leaders ¡ª thank you for

your continued suppor t , pride, and trust . It is

going to be a great school year.

In par tnership,

Lewis D. Ferebee, Ed.D.
