Brief Biography

Susan Jussaume joined the faculty of Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2007. She has taught Advanced Practice Health Assessment and Practicum Seminars. Susan has 30 years of experience in the field of health care. She has worked in the areas of Medical/Surgical, Orthopedic, Maternity, Pediatrics, and Oncology. For sixteen years Susan was extensively involved in authoring and presenting an AIDS Awareness Program for grammar school aged children and their families. In 1997 she was presented with the Lumina Award given at Loyola University in Chicago for pioneering one of the first comprehensive grammar school education programs for AIDS awareness.

Since 1991 she has functioned in the role of Advanced Practice Nurse with a specialty in Family and Community Health. In 1998 Susan teamed up with a brand new family practice where she worked diligently with the staff and health care providers of the practice to assure its success. Susan carried her own patient caseload. She has extensive experience in collaborating with her colleagues and medical specialists of the community. She has also drawn on the wisdom of her mentors in health care, some of whom are listed above in her CV. Since 2000, Susan has incorporated the role of clinical preceptor at her family practice site as she values the importance of teaching and role modeling for the new generation of student nurse practitioners. The family practice group became known for its comprehensive, compassionate and competent manner of caring for its patients and families. Susan practices within the holistic and integrative model of health care, utilizing nursing theory from Margaret Newman's Health as Expanding Consciousness Theory and Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring. She is certified in Therapeutic Touch, which was the subject of her graduate research, and The Soul Directed Approach to patient interaction, certified by the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine.

In 1991 Susan ventured into the realm of being an entrepreneur and established her own wellness education business where she became the owner and director of the Nightingale Health and Wellness Center. She offers wellness and preventative health education services for small group classes, encouraging individuals to actively participate in their health care choices, facilitating growth to one's highest potential and level of wellness.

Susan's interests lie strongly in the field of integrative and holistic nursing and health care. She is interested in developing curriculum utilizing the integrative model. Susan makes her home in a suburb of Boston with her husband Allan with whom she has raised a family of four children, two daughters and two sons.

The Journey

My love of caring for people began when I was a young girl. We have a large extended family and my parents always seemed to be caring for someone, and I was often with them when they were in this role. I began to develop a joy and interest in caring for people and teaching them about their health. When I was a teenager my father developed bone cancer. His illness immersed me into the world of healthcare. The nurses who cared for my dad inspired me; I often marveled at their medical expertise and ability to maintain a close bond of caring with their patient (my father) and our family.

Choosing my undergraduate major was easy, as I followed my interest in caring for others to a professional level. I embarked into the field of nursing when it was undergoing a transitional phase from a three year hospital-based program to a four-year baccalaureate program. I was among the first graduates to complete the four-year college degree in nursing. That accomplishment proved to be a challenge when I worked side-by-side with many of my colleagues who were hesitant to accept this new form of professional nurse. It was exiting to be part of that pioneering phase, and this helped to build my character.

I always enjoyed one-on-one patient teaching, and wanted to grow further in my professional role. I returned to school to pursue my Master's Degree and obtain certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse. During my graduate studies I was introduced to concepts of therapeutic touch by Dr. Delores Kreiger. This opened up a whole new arena for me; I had found the world of holistic care and integrative therapies. If felt to me as if I had "come home" and found a place where I truly belonged in the nursing profession. It seemed as though I could not read or learn enough about this subject.

I gathered many other professional and personal mentors over the past thirty years of my professional nursing career, helping to build and solidify my holistic practice. I draw strongly on Dr. Margaret Newman's theory of caring, "Health as Expanding Consciousness" and Dr. Jean Watson's, Theory of Human Caring. I value caring for the total human being, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, and incorporated this as a personal and professional approach to life.

I spent twenty years in the Advanced Practice role in a family practice setting, where I had the honor and privilege of caring for my own patient population and collaborating with my colleagues, medical specialists, my patients and the community at large. I recently transitioned into academia, where my love of teaching will extend to the students I am fortunate to teach. The time has arrived when I can give back to my profession as a role model, teacher and healer. I will continue to advance my role, as I plan to pursue the Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree. I hope to be blessed with many more active years in my profession, as we are once again at a pioneering stage in our field. Carpe Diem!
