Live To Ride!

T here have been a lot of events over the past month. There was "Wings over the Smokies," where I camped at the Blue Ridge cycle campground with Jack Schardine and Ken Rouse. It was a great facility. Then there was the Chapter camp out at Panacea where Wayne and Belinda Hicks, with the assistance of Wayne and Margaret Parmer, put on a delicious fish fry. Of course, there was a lot of help from many Chapter members. Thanks everyone!

The ride to the Panama City fun day was a wet one, but well worth it. Our Chapter members won many door prizes including the grand prize. Ask Wayne Hicks about that one! This past weekend was biketoberfest in Daytona, where George Walsh won first place in the Gold Wing category of the bike show. As I write this, many of us are getting ready for the Sweet Potato Festival in Ocilla, GA. I haven't been to this rally in many years, so I'm looking forward to this event.

My appreciation goes to Wayne Hicks for volunteering to help with the games for our rally and to Arnold Watts who volunteered to handle the statistical awards and trophies. We are still looking for a facility to have our Christmas party. Any ideas from members are all welcome.

As you know, our Chapter has a reputation for having some of the best door prizes around! This can only happen with a good team to get the job done. With enough people it goes like a snap, with the work spread among several people.

First, we need a good team of door-prize getters. After January 1st, this team will call on businesses who have given in the past and ask for their continued support. With enough Team members, each person only has to visit four or five sponsors! So far Sunny Andrews, Gus Daniels, and Belinda Hicks have signed up to help. Linda Couch and Marvin Culverson will assist with prize pick-up. We need a few more folks to round out this Team!

Taking A Look at Accident Contributing Factors

Inspection of accident report statistics is, to me, very interesting and enlightening. In many ways, my study of the data reinforce what I have been taught and have read about motorcycle safety. Clearly, the data show that most accidents occur because of dangers coming from in front of the rider and from left turns.

On the other hand, I am surprised to see that most accidents occur in broad daylight, in good weather, no alcohol involvement, and on good roads. In this article, I take a close look at what is called “first contributing cause due the road conditions” and “first contributing cause due to the environment.”

In the table below, the year 2000 data are shown with environmental causes across the top and road conditions down the left side. The definitions of the variables are shown below the table.

Looking at the data, we can see that the vast majority of accidents occur under road conditions that have NO DEFECTS and the driver’s vision is NOT OBSCURED. Even if the road conditions contain no defects, the environments that are the most dangerous are inclement weather (code 2), encountering stopped vehicles (code 3), and glare (code 10).

Looking further at road conditions down the left side of the table, we see that roads that are under construction or roads that have loose surface materials are by far the most dangerous. Holes, ruts, and unsafe paved road edges also are a problem.

Now, what are the implications of these data? First, when you see road construction signs, immediately decrease your speed and start looking for poor road conditions. Second, always be on the lookout for gravel, sand, or other debris on the road surface, particularly on turns. Third, when it is dawn or dusk and the glare of the sun is right in your eyes, you might want to pull off the road and wait a few minutes for conditions to change. Alternatively, at least reduce your speed and increase your vigilance.

Meet Gus Daniels, Jr.

Many of us know that Gus retired from the Marine Corps this year after 23 ½ years of service. He is currently employed with the Department of Banking & Finance.

Donna and Gus have three children, Latrece (24), Teresa (20), and Durell (15), and three grandchildren, Aniyah (3), Keyshawn (10 months), and Devin (3 months). The family pet is a four year old Ball Python!

In his 30 years of riding Gus has owned a 80 cc mini bike, 1986 Honda Helix, 1983 and 1985 Yamaha Ventures, and his current 1993 Honda Gold Wing Aspencade. His longest motorcycle trip was from Tallahassee, FL to Stamford, CT. Among his favorite motorcycle roads are the canopy roads in Florida, the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, and Merritt Parkway in Connecticut.

Gus says, “I made a promise years ago with my Lord and Savor. I ride for Jesus first, using my bike for ministry work first and recreation second.” What he likes best about Chapter FL1-A2 is, “the friendly chapter members who have always attracted me to the chapter.”

EPA To Propose Street Bike Emissions Rules in November

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The federal Environmental Protection Agency has announced that it will issue proposed new rules in November to toughen emissions standards for road motorcycles, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

Besides tightening existing standards, those new rules could include requirements for specific components on motorcycles -- such as fuel injection and catalytic converters -- as well as "anti-tampering" regulations, which could prohibit certain modifications to motorcycles, such as installing certain after market exhaust systems.

November's proposals will follow on the heels of strict emissions proposals for off-highway motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles released by EPA Administrator Christine Whitman on September 14. The EPA had hoped to issue proposed regulations covering street bikes at the same time, but indicated it ran out of time to put those proposed rules together and will finish them in November.

The AMA and other motorcycist groups had asked the EPA to consider only off-highway vehicles this year, rather than tackling both road and off-highway emissions at the same time. In the end, though, the EPA chose to ignore those requests. "As much as we may want new EPA rules governing street bikes to be delayed, they will not," said Edward Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. "The proposed rules, when they are issued in November, could have a major impact on motorcycling in the near future."

"We've already submitted official comments expressing our concerns, and we're prepared to act swiftly to an analyze and respond to the proposed rules when they are issued," Moreland said. "Motorcyclists nationwide need to be prepared to express their own views in November.

Among other things, the AMA asked federal officials in February to refrain from establishing a list of technologies -- like fuel injection and catalytic converters -- and asked that any new standards be performance-based, allowing manufacturers the maximum amount of innovation in reducing emissions.

Back Roads to Bowling Green

September 22nd: Finally, we are on the road at 9:15 a.m. after putting the puppies in the slammer. Mike's bike is the pack mule since it has the back seat and tail rack. Tallahassee traffic… grrrrr! I finally started to relax one we got out into the country.

We took U.S. 27 north all the way to Lumpkin, GA (this is a great ride, Charles!). We had a super country meal at a place off the main square named after the local flora: Kudzu! Then we stopped at Providence Canyon State park to look at the “Little Grand Canyon.”

We took U.S. 27 to U.S. 280 in to Columbus, GA. As a sign of the times, all of the unattended gates in Fort Benning had concrete barricades. Then we caught U.S. 431 in Opelika, AL. Cheaha State park Drive was real scenic; the overstuffed hills reminded me that we’re not in Florida any more!

We stayed overnight in Gadsden, AL. As we were departing Sunday, a local bandito flagged me over; I thought the wheel must be falling off my bike! He just wanted to admire the Touring Ace (good taste!).

We took U.S. 431 through Huntsville, AL and across the Tennessee state line. Seemed like a long ride on Apalachee Parkway! Once we got to Tennessee, the back country roads were curvy and the scenery couldn’t be beat! We got in to Bowling Green, KY early that evening, just before a cold front and rain came through.

We stayed with Mike's Mom and made the rounds to see his brother and one of his sisters, etc. On Tuesday we visited the Corvette museum - a must see for any 'vette fan! On Thursday we took his Mom to Red Lobster for lunch and a super birthday party!

On Friday, September 28th we started retracing our route home on a sunny, crisp, jacket-weather morning. The riding was smooth until we got to Guntersville, AL, where they decided to have a parade in the middle of the day. Unfortunately, the local cops were too busy eating doughnuts to redirect traffic. We finally followed some locals around the parade.

We continued along the strip of U.S. 431 to the world's traffic light capital, Gadsden, AL. We decided to push on a bit past dark and Mike found a Motel 6 in Columbus, GA conveniently located across from the exotic dancers.

We thought we woke up early on Saturday, but due to losing an hour in the time-space continuum, we didn't hit the road until 8:30 a.m. We skipped breakfast and booked it in to Crawfordville to spring the dogs before lock-down time at 1:00 p.m. And we also made it to the Chapter fish fry that night!

We both wish we had more time to explore those curvy mountain roads. Total trip mileage: 1231!
