American Literature Independent Reading …
American Literature Independent Reading Overview & Guidelines Mrs. Breaux 2008-09
Why are we doing this?
• I feel like you get assigned novels/plays, textbooks but don’t get to choose major works to read on your own and individual choice is important.
• Because you probably don’t read enough
• Because many of you may not like reading but I believe that you just haven’t found the right kind of book yet.
• Because your life is busy and you have distractions such as: the Internet, TV, Work, etc. after school that keeps you from reading
• Because it will: improve your vocabulary, your reading comprehension, your critical thinking and your writing.
• Because I want you to be a critical thinker about the world around you and learn to love reading and literature (
What are the guidelines?
• You are expected to read 300 page novel/play/short story anthology each quarter. Yep, I’m not kidding. That equals roughly 33 pages a week. Can you do it? Of course. PLUS, I’m giving you 25 minutes EVERY Friday to read.
• You must pick an American author.
• You must ONLY pick a play, novel (non-fiction and fiction), or short story anthology. No information manuals, etc.
• You will initially pick a book today to read on Fridays, but ultimately it must have your parents’ approval for you to read it for this assignment.
• Pick a book on your reading level. If you pick a book that’s too easy, you’re not improving ANYTHING. Challenge yourself. Don’t pick something that is not quality. I can help you with this and so can Ms. Goodnight, the media specialist.
• Can you bring books from home? Yes, as long as they are approved from Mom and/or Dad and me.
What will I do with my book besides read it on Friday and at home?
• You will have a final culminating project that you will present to the class.
• You will keep a weekly reading log that I will explain to you this Friday.
Make me proud, pick a book that challenges you!!! (
