Week 4: September 2nd – September 5th 2008

Essential Questions:

What is the American Dream? What can we learn about the values and dreams of a people in a certain time and place in history from reading their literature? What effect did the discovery of the “new world” have on literature?

New Vocab List words 21-30 – sentences due Thursday; quiz over words 1-30 on Friday

Continue discussion of exploration narratives – discuss Christopher Columbus’ narrative account

Look at Captivity Narratives p. 68-69

Group reading and discussion: Read & Review background info on p. 70-71

Group reading of John Smith’s excerpt from The General History of Virginia p. 72-77

Each student must answer questions on p. 77 - due at end of class period

Set up writing portfolios

Homework: Review Vocabulary; Read excerpt from Of Plymouth Plantation p. 78-84, jotting down notes and summarizing the highlights of each of the 3 sections of the passage – be ready to discuss

Wednesday

Go over DGP – Tuesday’s task

Discuss Of Plymouth Plantation

Begin discussing Puritans – review background p. 98-99

Terms: Puritan Plain Style, apostrophe, conceit (extended metaphor)

Read and discuss “Huswifery” and “To My Dear and Loving Husband”

Homework: Review Vocabulary (sentences due tomorrow; quiz Friday); If you do not finish this part in class - Reread “Huswifery” p. 100-101 and “To My Dear and Loving Husband” p. 102 and paraphrase/ summarize in your own words – what are these two poems about? What is happening? What are the important elements to remember?; Finally, find a modern day, school-appropriate love song that has some similarity to “To My Dear and Loving Husband” (remember universal theme: love). Print or handwrite the lyrics & bring them with you tomorrow.

Thursday

Go over DGP – Wednesday & Thursday’s tasks; Vocabulary sentences due

Finish discussion of Puritan poetry – partner Venn diagram activity, individual paragraphs

Read and review background on p. 106-107 and read “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”

Homework: Review Vocabulary; Finish Venn diagram paragraphs; Finish reading “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and jot down examples of imagery and sensory details

Friday

Go over DGP – Friday’s task

Vocab Quiz 3 (words 1-30)

Review imagery and sensory details in “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” (compare to Olaudah)

Review for test on Unit 1: Origins and Encounters – test will be on Monday

Homework: Review vocabulary; Study for Unit 1 test on Monday: Origins and Encounters

DGP sentence for next week: interstate highways were originally built to transport military troops and equipment
