Treaty of Versailles, Worldwide Depression, The Rise of Nazism and The Holocaust

I. Treaty of Versailles

A. Treaty ending WWI

B. Punished the Germans by

1. Requiring they give up land rich in natural resources

2. Putting the German emperor on trial for war crimes

3. Requiring Germany reduce the size of their army and navy.

II. Worldwide Depression

A. Most countries experienced a time of economic prosperity at the end of WWI

B. In 1929 there was a stock market crash in the U.S.

1. Values of stocks quickly dropped

2. Fearing they would lose everything, investors began selling off their stocks which

caused prices to drop even more.

3. People had less money so could not purchase goods from businesses.

4. Businesses closed because they could not pay their debts.

5. Workers lost jobs.

6. The American economy came to a halt.

C. Similar events occurred all over the globe causing what became a worldwide economic depression.

II. The Rise of Nazism

A. WWI came at a great cost to the country of Germany.

1. Destroyed by war, the highways, roads and railroads needed to be rebuilt.

2. The Treaty of Versailles limited the size of the military, so military jobs were lost.

3. Goods became scarce, so prices went up.

4. The German people blamed the government.

B. Nazi Party

1. Was led by Adolf Hitler

2. Said they could solve Germany’s problems.

3. Blamed the country’s problems on the Treaty of Versailles and Jews who they said were

controlling the banks and money, keeping other Germans from making a good living.

4. Hitler was chancellor and passed laws to give himself more power, eventually becoming

dictator with autocratic power.

a. Began to rebuild the military (against the Treaty of Versailles), but this put people to

work as they built weapons.

b. People went to work to build a superior highway system.

c. The economy improved, but people lost many civil rights.

5. Nazis imprisoned or killed anyone who spoke out against them.

6. Hitler started what became WWII when he sent troops to regain the territory lost by the Treaty

of Versailles.

7. European countries did nothing to stop Germany until Hitler invaded Poland, at which point

France and Great Britain declared war on Germany, and WWII had begun.

IV. The Holocaust

A. Involved the Nazi’s systematic killing of every Jew.

B. Jews were imprisoned in slums, and were forced to wear armbands.

C. Eventually Jews were sent to concentration camps where they were forced to work or were killed.

D. Hitler and the Nazi’s engaged in genocide as they planned to kill every Jew

E. Resulted in the formation of the country of Israel

1. Having no where to go at the end of the war, survivors of the Holocaust wanted to go to

their ancient homeland, Palestine in the Middle East

2. In 1947 the United Nations divided Palestine into an Arab state and a Jewish state, Israel
