PAVEMENT MARKINGS

Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

1. Include technical data and tested physical and performance properties.

1. Indicate pavement markings, colors, lane separations, defined parking spaces, and dimensions to adjacent work.

2. Indicate, with international symbol of accessibility, spaces allocated for people with disabilities.

Retain "Samples" Paragraph below for single-stage Samples, with a subordinate list if applicable.

1. Measurement and payment provisions and safety program submittals included in standard specifications do not apply to this Section.

5. FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Limitations: Proceed with pavement marking only on clean, dry surfaces and at a minimum ambient or surface temperature of [40 deg F (4.4 deg C) for alkyd materials] [55 deg F (12.8 deg C) for water-based materials], and not exceeding 95 deg F (35 deg C).

2. PAVEMENT-MARKING PAINT

Retain one of four "Pavement-Marking Paint" paragraphs below. Verify availability with marking-paint manufacturers.

A.

Retain required color(s) in "Color" Subparagraph below. If more than one color is required, indicate locations of each on Drawings or by inserts.

Retain "Glass Beads" Paragraph below if reflectorized pavement markings are required. Retain option or "Roundness" Subparagraph below, or both, if required; revise to suit Project. See Evaluations.

Insert product requirements here for permanent-marking tapes or thermoplastic paints if required. See Evaluations.

1. EXAMINATION

A. Verify that pavement is dry and in suitable condition to begin pavement marking according to manufacturer's written instructions.

B. Proceed with pavement marking only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

2. PAVEMENT MARKING

A. Do not apply pavement-marking paint until layout, colors, and placement have been verified with Architect.

Marking-paint manufacturers caution that paint will bleed or tear surface of new asphalt unless asphalt is aged before painting. This aging period may vary from 30 to 90 days. If pavement marking must proceed immediately, consider revising text to a phased application of a thin first coat followed by a thicker second coat once asphalt has aged. Verify that two-coat application is recommended by marking-paint manufacturer.

C. Sweep and clean surface to eliminate loose material and dust.

Retain option in paragraph below if retaining waterborne emulsion or latex pavement-marking paint.

Retain first subparagraph below if graphic symbols or lettering is required.

3. PROTECTING AND CLEANING

A. Protect pavement markings from damage and wear during remainder of construction period.

B. Clean spillage and soiling from adjacent construction using cleaning agents and procedures recommended by manufacturer of affected construction.
