Pediatric Dentistry

A pediatric dentist is a specialist dedicated to the oral health of children and the monitoring of their facial growth and development. Dr. Alan's office, formerly Dr. Judy Taylor’s office is designed for treating children from infancy through adolescence, as well as the medically and physically compromised children.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child's first visit to the dentist should occur by 12 months of age. This first visit will enable us to evaluate your child and introduce you to proper oral hygiene. Diet, fluoride, finger and pacifier habits and tooth eruption will be discussed to insure optimal oral health.

Our Mission... is to put the needs of your child or children first. We are committed to proper oral, dental and hygiene care from infancy through adolescence. Although we aim for high standards, welcome your suggestions and opinions and guarantee they will be taken into consideration.

Our Goal... is to give your child a pleasant experience which will enable them to develop a positive attitude towards dental care. We try hard to develop relationships with our patients based on trust, love, and understanding. Fun and laughter are the norm in our office and each staff member is addressed on a first name basis.

We sincerely trust that you and your child will find the first visit and all visits to our office pleasant, comfortable and rewarding. We appreciate your referral of family and friends to our office and thank you in advance for your trust!

Our Mission Statement

As a pediatric dental office we strive… meet the individual needs of children, and we are committed to caring for infants, children, adolescents with or without special needs.

We believe that it is a privilege to treat children, and that we have a unique opportunity to make a difference in their lives. You and your child are vital members of our practice. We encourage your ongoing participation in your child’s oral care. We respect your trust in us to be the “best we can be”.

We are committed to providing excellence in your child’s oral health. We have created an environment that encourages preventative care that is child friendly, facilitates communication with families, respects privacy, and promotes oral dental health. We recognize the uniqueness of every child and the right to express their individuality.

We will continually seek ways to minimize the child’s or children’s apprehension to dental care through our words, therapeutic touch and other behavior management techniques. We will also teach and encourage you to actively participate in maintaining your child’s oral health.

We believe in enabling and empowering children and families with information, using appropriate child-like terms when communicating dental terminology. As a team, we are available to support and educate our patients, their families and our community.

Our mission is commitment to putting the needs of your child or children first. It is our pledge that we might always be in pursuit of excellence in caring for your child.

Before The First Visit

Please discuss the positive aspects of dentistry with your child. One way to convey good feelings to your child about dental visits is to remind them that going to the dentist is a sign that they are growing up. You can explain that Dr. Alan will count and may take pictures of his or her teeth.

Please do not tell your child that the "dentist will not hurt" as this may never have entered his or her mind. Instead, you may wish to assure your child that Dr. Alan will be gentle and friendly. Also, please avoid using the words "needle”, “shot”, “pull", or any other words suggesting unpleasantness. Expect your child to do well and enjoy their visit to our office and chances are they will do just that!

The First Visit

You will be asked to fill out a “New Patient Form” (for first time patients) or a “Medical History Update Form” (for regular patients which has to be completed every six (6) months). Your new information or updated changes will be entered into our system and the attending staff member will review your child health history in the event of any changes that we may need to be aware of. You are welcome to accompany your child at all times during the visit to the treatment and examination area. This will give you the opportunity to see our staff in action and allow Dr. Alan to discuss dental findings and treatment directly with you. Dr. Alan will perform a head and neck examination and then evaluate the health of the teeth, gums and your child's bite. Dental radiographs (x-rays) are taken only when necessary. Additional services will be scheduled for a later visit.

Appointment Policy

The scheduled appointment is reserved specifically for your child. Any change in this appointment affects many patients therefore confirming your child’s appointment is necessary to avoid losing your initial appointment. If a cancellation is unavoidable, please call our office at least 24 hours in advance so that we may give that appointment to another child. We try to appoint younger children early in the day because they are at their best at this time. Whenever possible, older children can be appointed outside regular school hours. Our contact number is Tel. # (718) 789-9733.

Office Financial Policies

Payment is requested at each appointment as service is rendered and can be made by cash, check, MasterCard or VISA. Please be aware that the parent bringing the child to our office is legally responsible for payments on all charges. Statements will be sent to the head of household on file. If we do not receive payment within 30 days, you will be expected to pay for all dental services completed.

Emergencies

If your child has an accident, please call our office as soon as possible. We will see your child immediately. If it is an after-hours emergency, an after hours number will be given on the answering machine or please go to the Long Island College Hospital and ask for the dental resident. The first 60 minutes after an accident are the most critical to treatment of dental trauma.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, gently rinse, but do not scrub the tooth under water. Replace the tooth in the socket if possible. If this is impossible, place the tooth in a glass of milk or clean wet cloth and come to the office immediately. If the tooth is fractured, please bring in any pieces you can find.

Our schedule may be delayed in order to accommodate an injured child. Please accept our apologies in advance should an emergency occur during your child's appointment. We will do exactly the same if your child is ever in need of emergency treatment.
