TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND RESPONSIBILITIES Course/Clerkship/Residency or Fellowship/CME DirectorshipsPsychiatry Internship Research Literacy, LSUHSC Department of Psychiatry, Course Director. Since 2012, I have developed and directed this course, in which the Interns learn a critical approach to the medical literature pertaining to clinical practice of psychiatry. This course is distinguished by its examination of the fitness of current study design methodology and by an in depth critical review of the historical underpinnings of the research validating the use of antipsychotics for illness. Clinical Psychiatry PYAS 6573 and 6566, Course Director. In 2014 I was asked to develop and direct the Clinical Psychiatry portion of the new program for Physician Assistants. My goals in developing this course are both to prepare the physician assistants for their certifying examination and to guide them in the best practice approaches to diagnosis and treatment of mental and behavioral health in primary care and acute care settings. Collaborative Consultation Psychiatry and Tele-Psychiatry, 2012 to presentI developed and direct this year-long clinical rotation for psychiatry third year residents, who work either on-site or by tele in various primary care clinics outside of New Orleans providing mental and behavioral health services for children and adults. I coordinate the concurrent training in this primary care collaboration of psychiatry residents, psychology post-doctoral fellows, nurse practitioner students, and physician assistant students. Curriculum Development/ImplementationPsychiatry Internship Research Literacy, LSUHSC Department of PsychiatryFor this series of six one-hour lectures for the psychiatry intern class, I developed a new course to examine mental and behavioral health research from historical development, study design, and critical reading perspectives. I start with a reading of two landmark studies from the psychiatric literature, which includes analysis of the original design and discussion about how to interpret follow-up studies. Next I examine fundamental assumptions underpinning current psychopharmacological research by reviewing studies from the discovery of the antipsychotic medication to the present. I finish with the history of psychiatric diagnosis.PYAS 6573 Physician Assistant Clinical Psychiatry, 2014 to presentThis is the third year of a new 3 hour course for the 2nd year Physician Assistants in the Louisiana State University Health Science Center New Orleans Department of Physician Assistant Studies. In this course over fifteen weeks, physician assistant students learn the basics of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment with an emphasis on the primary care perspective. The beginning of the course focuses on interviewing and case formulation. The latter part of the course focuses on diagnosis and treatment of the most common forms of mental illness. Special attention is given to the problem of over-prescribing. The students practice motivational interviewing, supportive and interpersonal therapy, and other brief behavioral interventions. Finally, I invite a patient into class to be interviewed. PYAS 6566 Physician Assistant Psychiatric Medicine Clerkship 2014-2015During this clerkship I provide a clinical experience and directly supervise 5 Physician Assistant (PA) students for one month rotations through the Gulf Coast Clinics. They have a similar experience to the Residents in the clinics that, along with the embedded Psychologists, also assist in supervision. Additionally, the PA students are given the chance to assist the Care Management Team with patient calls for medication monitoring and behavioral activation. Collaborative Consultation Psychiatry and Tele-Psychiatry, 2012 to presentI developed a year-long curriculum including multidisciplinary supervision, lecture, and practical testing. During this rotation the residents become proficient in the technical, administrative, and clinical use of tele-technologies, and must learn to work effectively in an inter-professional team in the primary care setting.Creation of Enduring Teaching MaterialsTelemedicine Resource Manual: This manual is designed to be a practical guide for the third year residents as well as the psychologists and clinical psychiatrists performing telemedicine. It includes technical instruction related to the clinical and administrative practice of telemedicine, as well as a variety of research articles validating the use of tele-technologies for diagnosis and treatment. Slide set for the Resident Education Subcommittee of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM): In 2015 I created 55 slides in a set entitled “Integrated Care: working mental health in the new health care environment” for inclusion on the updated APM website for education of residents and fellows in psychosomatic medicine.Slide set for PYAS 6573 Physician Assistant Clinical Psychiatry: I created 19 powerpoint lectures for this course including topics ranging from “Psychiatric Interviewing and Building Rapport in 15 minutes” to “Eating Disorders in the Primary Care Setting” to “Psychiatric Emergencies: Lost Opportunities for Initiating Treatment”. Slide set for People’s Health: In 2016 I created 67 slides divided into three learning modules entitled “Depression in Primary Care” for dissemination by People’s Health to their primary care providers as part of an ongoing educational and quality improvement effort.
