Here is what some of our teachers say about living in Doha and working at Oryx international School.

Teacher Views

Female, married with children.

Doha offers a good quality of life where you can spend more time with your family. The education is very good by UK standards and there are plenty of extracurricular activities for children, particularly sporting activities. Doha also has some beautiful safe beaches for children as well as parks and indoor play areas.

Single, female.

`I love living in Doha because it is such a vibrant city with a large expat community. I enjoy living and working in a multicultural environment and I have a much better work-life balance here, compared to the UK. It is an amazing life experience and I am so glad to have this amazing opportunity.'

`I really love that the students in Qatar are motivated to learn. They look forward to coming to school and want to work hard. In the UK I spent most of my time trying to manage the students' behaviour, whilst in Qatar, I spend most of my time teaching. The school here is very supportive and the standards for teaching are just as high as in the UK, but the atmosphere, attitudes and enthusiasm of all the staff and children is inspiring.'

`Another great thing about working in Doha is that I can save money and travel! I've already been to Sri Lanka and back to the UK and plan to go to Oman, Dubai and Bahrain in the near future.'

Living in Qatar can be easy but also frustrating when negotiating with cab drivers. It is a safe country but like all country's common sense is needed. Accommodation is great and well furnished. Nightlife is good for all ages some great Friday brunches. Good beaches. Easy to get around - plenty of taxis. Food shopping is reasonable - but like all countries, organic is expensive - a good New Zealand rib eye will cost ?5-6 in the supermarket. Average meal out ?20 with wine ?35 Not much in the way of local sightseeing, but there is a great Souq with good food. We also have the biggest Mosque in the Middle East.

Single, Male

`I take EAL lessons along with Physical Education.

I am 25 years old and a single male, I have been living in Doha since the beginning of January '17 so I am a relatively new resident within Doha however I am familiar with Doha as I regularly visited friends who have worked here for over a year.

Oryx International School has already been a great decision for me as the school is well structured offering the kids various ways to express their talents and interests whilst providing the children with a very healthy learning environment. The children are well mannered and very respectable towards their teachers which is pleasant to work in and be a part of. In addition Oryx School are willing to support me in furthering my studies to improve my career opportunities and in turn provide the children with a better quality of teaching.

Doha is quite a small city in some aspects but in-terms of the expat community, sporting events, restaurants, hotels, beaches and various other attractions it is very broad. I have lived here for 4 weeks and already I have meet many new friends with the same interests as myself and not only within Oryx School. Many people I have met are through sports, social gatherings and through mutual friends which offers that social aspect outside of work. `

I have really enjoyed my short time so far in Qatar. There is lots of things to do each weekend and plenty of expats to socialise with. I am still able to play the sports I enjoyed at home and there are plenty of new ones to experience. Working in Qatar is very similar to working in London. At Oryx International School, the children are from all parts of the globe and the staff all help each other out.

`My time here at The Oryx International School has been such a wonderful experience since joining in August. From the moment I got picked up by Mr. Madine at the airport, all those months ago, Qatar has felt like my home. The school has made me feel so welcomed and it was a very easy transition to slot into life here in Doha.

Living in Doha is fantastic and it has a good vibrant social life. Doha has got lots of opportunities to join different sport teams, if that appeals to you. I must say that the weather is a very attractive aspect for me as it has only rained twice this year! Working here in Qatar gives you an excellent opportunity to travel and see some amazing parts of the world.

This is my first experience working in an international school and I am really enjoying working with children from all over the world. The children are a pleasure to work with and they have such a wonderful enthusiasm about their learning. I would highly recommend anyone to come and join our fantastic team at The Oryx International School, you won't regret it.'

`I have been in Doha for just over 5 months and it has been a very enjoyable experience so far. I have found it a great place to live as I have fallen in with a good group of friends and I have got involved with a sports team over here. Although it is quite expensive to socialise - there is an endless amount of places to go for food and drinks. It has also given me the opportunity to do travelling on a regular basis which is something I found limited when living in the UK.

Working in Qatar has been a lot more enjoyable than in the UK. The class sizes are smaller and as this is a new school I have found I have had more interaction time with the kids. One other great part of the job here is that you teach children from all over the world and they bring their own unique personalities to your class, giving it a really International feel!'
