American Slavery Webquest

As we end the first semester and the study of the birth of the United States we have examined many topics and we will continue this process the second semester. One such topic is the issue of slavery. It is a thorn in the side of American history. It was an issue that generation after generation put off. Over the course of the next 3 days we are going to examine this issue, its impact on those involved and its lasting effect on American history.

This web quest is straightforward. It will require you to do some reading and brief research to answer the questions. The more you put into this the more you will get out of it!

Part I: Slavery in America

1. Go to wgbh/aia/ This is where we will begin our journey. Click on Enter.

2. Click on Part I: The Terrible Transformation

3. Click on Narrative. Click on “The African Slave Trade and Middle Passage”

You are investigative reporter for the London Times. It is your job to uncover the roots of the slave trade in Africa. What will be the title of your article and what will you attempt to illustrate over the course of your investigation?

Imagine you are a sailor on a ship transporting slaves. Create a diary entry describing the conditions on board the ship during the Middle Passage from your point of view.

Imagine 20 years has passed. You are a survivor of the ‘Middle Passage’, how will you explain this to your children?

Look over the Map and slavery in the different regions. Answer the following questions:

a. By 1830, how many slaves were in the U.S.?

What was their monetary worth?

b. What percentage of Southern whites owned slaves?

c. How many states left the Union after the election of Lincoln?

d. How many people died in the Civil War?
