2. Catalog Description [§335.2]:

Provides the knowledge and skills to cut and weld metals commonly found at the construction site. Students set up and operate oxy-fuel torches to cut metal to shape and dimension. Students also use shielded metal arc welding equipment to fuse metal for fabrication.

4. Learning Outcomes [§335.2]

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

• Describe the safety precautions employed around welding equipment

• Explain the operation and application of the oxy-fuel system.

• Use the oxy-fuel system to cut metal to shape

• Explain the operation and application of shielded metal arc welding

• Identify the types and applications of shielded metal arc electrodes

• Set up and adjust shielded metal arc welding equipment for use

• Demonstrate proper arc striking techniques

• Weld metal parts using proper technique

• Perform a visual inspection of welds and determine quality

The planned sequence of learning activities includes:

A. Safety training 3 hours

B. Oxy-fuel orientation 5 hours

C. Oxy-fuel cutting lab 5 hours

D. SMAW orientation 5 hours

E. SMAW electrodes and applications 3 hours

F. SMAW lab 20 hours

G. Inspect weldments for quality 4 hours
