Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

The University offers an undergraduate Nursing degree: The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing [A.A.S.N.]. The UDC current Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog; Division of Student Affairs’ current Info at a Glance; Schedule of Classes for each semester; UDC Website, udc.edu and the current Nursing Handbook provide information regarding the policies for undergraduate nursing students at UDC. Students are responsible for using these public documents to enhance their academic experiences and are held accountable for policy adherence. The information provided about the Nursing Program which is posted at the UDC website supersedes printed documents.

Students are not automatically admitted into the Nursing Program. Eligible students must make application to the program and meet all of the guidelines and standards established for admission. Students enrolled at UDC as regular students must have completed the 14 hours of General Education Requirements; earned a minimum grade of “C” in each course of the program of study; and earned a UDC cumulative grade point average [CGPA] of 3.00 or higher in the General Education Requirements to be eligible to make formal application to the Nursing Program. Nursing students are admitted in the spring and fall semesters.

Selection among those who meet the eligibility criteria for program admission includes but is not limited to the following requirements:

Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or greater in all General Education Requirement courses.

Completion of all General Education Requirement courses with a grade of “C” or better

Completion of all science courses within five years of admission to the A.A.S.N. Program

Students may only have one (1) repeat in any science courses

Completed application and essay received on or before the deadline

Satisfactory Professional recommendations received on or before the deadline

Eligibility to obtain licensure as a registered nurse

Completion of a standardized admissions examination

Mandatory Student Interview

Must have health clearance with UDC Health Services.

The Admissions, Progression, and Graduation [APG] Committee evaluates all nursing applications. The Committee reviews each application to verify that all General Education Requirements and pre-admissions criteria have been met. Students who have met the eligibility criteria will be notified regarding the standardized admission examination details [test fee, testing date, and time] in writing. The Admissions Test performance in Math, Reading, English, and Science [Anatomy and Physiology] will be considered in the screening process. Students will be interviewed to obtain additional information. The APG Committee recommendations are forwarded to the faculty and to the Director of Nursing. Applicants are notified by the Director of Nursing of the decision regarding their admission status. When the selection process is completed, the list of remaining applicants is discarded. Students wishing consideration during the next application cycle must reapply.

Final acceptance into the Nursing Program is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the general education requirements coursework listed below and maintaining a 3.00 CGPA. Once admitted to the nursing program, all nursing students must maintain a 2.8 grade point average.

Follow the instructions below to apply to the Nursing Program:

• Complete the attached application by typing or printing in black ink on pages one and two. A typed essay is to be attached to the application. The essay is to be one page in length and explains Why you want to become a professional registered nurse and what contributions you can make to nursing and to UDC. Use APA format for the essay with a double-spaced manuscript on white letter length paper in a size 12 typing font. Place your signature and the date at the lower right-hand corner of the essay page.

• For the application to be processed, the following documents must be submitted with application:

a. Copy of an official transcript including any nursing transfer credits from other

Schools and/or an unofficial UDC transcript. Criminal Background Check by Global Investigative Services

• Two Professional (i.e. Supervisor, Professor, Assistant Manager or Manager only) recommendations letter should be submitted by the evaluator and to email Dr. Sharon Murphy at Sharon.Murply@udc.edu

• A personal interview will be requested to obtain additional information

• Proof of current Health Insurance valid for one year

• All applicants for the AASN Program are required to take a pre-admission examination. Details will be provided in writing to applicants eligible to sit for the admission test.

• All applicants will be notified in writing regarding their status [accepted or rejected].

• Students accepted into the Nursing Program will receive clinical course admissions details. Requirements include picture identification [driver’s license or passport] CPR certification for health care providers (American Heart Association only), UDC Student ID, liability insurance, and health clearance. Additional documentation required by some health care agencies includes immigration status, police clearance, and drug screening.

• Students not accepted into the Nursing Program who wish to be considered during the next application cycle, must re-apply. There is no waiting list.
