Group Meeting 13.10.2015

1. Welcome to new members

We were pleased to greet 3 new members Sophie Ross, Pauline Davy and James Baggaley

and to have Joseph Oladuso return after a break of about 20 years.

2. Campaign Updates, Monthly Action, London Region.

Angela told us that Chinese lawyers connected with Human Rights cases still being detained.

On-line petition:

Stop Torture: Graham reported that there had been a good action in London regarding the Arms Fair with nice sense of humour;

There were no updates to report from: Burma (Dee Weekes) ; former Soviet Union (Jim O’Donnell); Central America (Roger Hardwick); Death Penalty . Peter reported that he has still not yet heard anything about a fresh prisoner of conscience case.

Monthly action: Japanese prisoner with mental health problems on death row for 40 years. David W-W will circulate details.

London Region conference a success with 70-80 attendees. Some emphasis on “Save the Human Rights Act” We are trying to get a trainer on this topic for the Nov. meeting and to make it a focus at the Book Sale.

David W-W has been co-opted on to the national nominations committee.

3. Book Sale. 21st November

David W-W will print leaflets for the next letter writing. There are a few donations of books going into Rachel’s garage and a number of boxes are promised for the week of the sale. It was agreed to bring forward putting out start date to Monday 16 Nov. if vicar agrees. Simon to contact.

Amnesty book shop will collect unsold books on 21st at 4.00 pm.. We need confirmation that Sarah and Pat’s contact can also do this.

4. Letter Writing Evening: Tuesday 27th October 8.00pm

This will again be at Greenwich Tavern opposite Park gates. There has been no resolution of the Picture House decision to discontinue our meeting there.

There are a number of cases in the current Amnesty magazine which we have not yet covered.

Please print 15 copies of your letter and bring to session or email to David W_W by Sunday 25 October. Email group to say what letters you are preparing in order to avoid duplication.

Brigitte will continue to distribute unused copies to local churches.

5. Write for Rights

It was agreed to once again run a stall at Greenwich Market. Preffered date is Sunday 6th December. Graham will contact market manager. David W-W will print address labels.

6. Future Meetings

November 10th : training on ‘Save the Human Rights Act”

December 8th: visit from Kate Allen, UK Director.

6. AOB:

Brigitte reported that a successful welcome lunch for refugees organised by AFRIL had been held at her house. The Iranian couple who went had been delighted to make contact with local residents. Brigitte welcomes donations of non perishable food and other essentials for refugees at letter writing and meetings.

7. Film

Thanks to Graham and Brigitte there followed a showing of the film ‘Who is Dayani Cristal?’
