Share the Fun of Membership in Peninsula Seniors
March is Membership Month! This is an opportunity to ask your friends and neighbors who may not yet be members to try us out. With all the fun, new activities that are available, I'm sure there is something that will interest everyone.
I was up at the Center last week when the Zumba Gold? class was going strong. What a high-energy group! I also peeked in at the ukulele group the week before, and there was a roomful of strummers, also going strong. Clearly, people are having fun.
Moving to our new facility with its more central location has increased our membership very nicely, which is good. We need members. And we need volunteers who come from our membership. As we have said countless times, we run on volunteer power. And all this is really important, as there are more and more seniors every year on the Hill, and it is Peninsula Seniors that provides opportunities for socialization and fun and important activities to enrich the minds of members and exercise their muscles.
I joined the Peninsula Seniors' Board in October 1998 and served as president from January 1, 1999 until December 31, 2000. I continued on the Board after that and in 2009 stepped up as president again. As of the February Board meeting, I joined Linda Ralls as a co-president. The plan is for me to remain in the capacity until the building purchase is complete. Once I step away as co-president I plan to continue being active in Peninsula Seniors and help out where I am needed.
It has been my pleasure to serve as your president, especially this exciting time when we have finally realized our organization's dream of a permanent home.
Ann Shaw Volunteer President

March 4. How Fast is the Universe Expanding?
Dr. Jeff Rich will discuss work at the Carnegie Observatories and provide a summary of what we know about how the universe is expanding and what it means for modern astrophysics. Jeff grew up in Washington state, studied astronomy at USC, and completed his Ph.D. in astronomy at the University of Hawaii in 2012. Since 2016 Jeff has run the outreach and education program at the Carnegie Observatories.
March 11. Two for the Show. Local residents Kathy Stinis
and Dave Diestel have written and will perform short, humorous scripts in the style of old radio shows. These sketches cover topics such as aging, grandchildren, shopping, computers, and everyday happenings.
March 18. Behind the Scenes and On the Road, with
the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. Marifrances Trivelli, Director of the museum, will be presenting a "behind the scenes" look at the Maritime Museum as it embarks on interior renovations and off-site programs.
March 25. The Making of "Mannequin Man by Day, Tenor by Night." The creator of this musical, Mr. James
Chiao, will discuss the composing of a musical theatre production as a senior citizen. Born in China in 1949, he and his famous musician-father survived Mao's Cultural Revolution. Immigrating to the US in 1980, James built a mannequin business and has now fulfilled his musical ambitions. His show will play at the Cerritos Center April 3?4.

Peninsula Seniors honored Dorothy and John Bohannon, seated. Accompanying them were Ann and David Buxton.
Weekly Lecture Series Named for John and Dorothy Bohannon
A reception honoring and thanking John and Dorothy Bohannon, who made a generous pledge to Peninsula Seniors Endowment Fund, was held on February 1. In recognition of their gift, our weekly Lecture Series will be named Peninsula Seniors' Bohannon Lecture Series.
John and Dorothy were pleased to make this contribution to help ensure future generations of seniors will be able to remain active, healthy, and educated.
Peninsula Seniors President Ann Shaw and Executive Director Margie Beierschmitt noted the significance of this kind of gift to our organization. "Because John and Dorothy have shared their plans with us, we can honor them during their lifetimes, and we are so pleased to celebrate them in naming our lecture series," said Margie. "Their names have been added to those already in our major giving category."
Ann added, "We hope this will inspire others to tell us about their planned giving bequests for Peninsula Seniors."
Bequests can be a way for individuals of modest means to make substantial contributions, while helping their family members avoid complications during the estate settlement process. For more information about planned giving to Peninsula Seniors, please call Executive Director Margie Beierschmitt at (310) 377-3003.
