Everywhere
o Check floors, walls and ceiling for any water damage, mold, mildew, etc. o Open and close every window. They shouldn't be hard to open. Each window should also
have a screen for safety. o Make sure all doors open and close securely. o Plug something small, like a phone charger, into each outlet. This will verify they all
have power. o Test all light switches to make sure they all work. o Check smoke alarms and ask about whether there's a sprinkler system.
Kitchen
o Run the kitchen faucet to check the water pressure and that both hot and cold work. Make sure you can't hear any strange sounds when the water is on.
o Open all cabinets to check storage space and make sure there's no evidence of unwanted pests.
o Turn on all appliances to make sure they work. o Open the fridge and freezer to check their temperatures.
Bedroom
o Confirm the closet and storage sizes. o If you don't have central air-conditioning, ask about whether you can install a window
AC unit. o If there's a ceiling fan, check to make sure all speeds work
Bathroom(s)
o Turn on all faucets and check for hot and cold water. o Flush the toilet to make sure it works. o Listen carefully each time you turn something on to make sure there are no strange noises
coming from the pipes. o Open cabinets and check for any standing water. o Check around the base of the toilet for water leaks. o Eyeball the tile and grout to make sure you don't see any cracks or chips. o Check to make sure your shower head is firmly in the wall.
Living space
o Test the locks on the front door for security. If there's not already a deadbolt or chain, ask if it's OK to install one for added safety.
o Check for how sound carries. o If the unit has laundry hook-ups check to make sure the space looks clean and the hook-
ups don't appear broken.
The building and neighborhood
o Look at the lighting to make sure common hallways, parking areas and the property, in general, is bright enough.
o If you have a balcony, make sure the access door is in good working order and locks tightly.
o Verify you'll have a place to park and that guests won't have to struggle to find parking. o If there are security gates onto the property, make sure they're working. o Check out all the shared amenities to make sure things look clean and well-maintained.
