To raise money, students will gather pledges from family and friends (no door-to-door) for the number of minutes read during the program or sponsors may pledge a flat rate. From September 15-September 28, 2016, students read and record the number of minutes read before or after school each day. The PTA will give book vouchers as rewards to students who raise at least $20 in pledges and bring those pledges to school by Friday, October 7, 2016. In addition, there are book voucher rewards for students and classes who read the most minutes. Book vouchers can be used at the Bonham Book Fair from October 10th-14th. Sponsors should be family and friends (no door-to-door). Sponsors may pledge based on the number of minutes read during the program or they may pledge a flat rate. Thursday, September 15-Wednesday, September 28: Students log their reading minutes on the attached Minute Recording Sheet (see page 6 of this packet). Students should try to read at least 20 minutes per day, but 40 minutes is encouraged. Review “What Minutes Count” on page 3 of this packet to determine which reading minutes can be used for the Read-a-thon.Thursday, September 29-Thursday, October 6: Collect pledges from sponsors.Friday, October 7: Students return their (a) Minute Recording Sheet, (b) Sponsorship Form, and (c) collected money from sponsors. PTA volunteers will pick-up these items from classroom teachers on the morning of October 7th.Monday, October 10: Book vouchers will be given as rewards to students who raise at least $20 in pledges and bring those pledges to school on October 7, 2016 (see “Rewards” on page 4 of this packet for more details).Monday, October 10-Friday, October 14: Book vouchers can be used at the Bonham Book Fair***IMPORTANT: Even if your student elects not to participate in gathering pledges, s/he can still participate in the reading portion of the Read-a-thon by keeping track of his/her reading minutes from Thursday, September 15-Wednesday, September 28 and returning his/her Minute Recording Sheet on Friday, October 7th. There are rewards for children and classrooms that read the most minutes. What Minutes Count?The following table lists minutes that count toward the Read-a-thon and can be recorded on the Minute Recording Sheet.Minutes that DO count toward the Read-a-thonMinutes that do NOT count toward the Read-a-thonALL reading for the Read-a-thon (September 15th-September 28th) must occur before and/or after school (before 8:05 a.m. or after 3:20 p.m.)Reading to yourself counts.Reading aloud to other people counts. If you happen to read to someone who is also participating in the Read-a-thon, it counts for both of you!
