BAAL Special Interest Group on Multilingualism2019 Annual ReportAims of the SIGThe Multilingualism SIG was set up in January 2019 with the following aims:to foster the development of a broad-based community of researchers in applied and to sociolinguistics with expertise in multilingualism and linguistic diversity;to create opportunities for the exchange and cross-fertilisation of ideas among researchers examining multilingualism in applied and sociolinguistics;to promote the value of multilingualism and linguistic diversity within UK academia and British society; and,to make a major contribution to raising the profile of multilingualism in BAAL.Business meetings and election proceduresThe provisional Co-Convenors Petros Karatsareas and Si?n Preece met for the first time on 27 June 2018 at UCL Institute of Education (IoE) in London and agreed the aims and name of the SIG. After garnering support from interested BAAL members, Karatsareas and Preece produced the proposal for establishing the SIG alongside the SIG’s constitution and submitted these for approval to the BAAL Executive Committee on 6 December 2018. The SIG was officially approved by the EC on 24 January 2019. This event showcased current work on multilingualism among the BAAL community and beyond, provide an opportunity for the exchange and cross fertilisation of ideas aimed at promoting the multilingual turn in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, and discuss the agenda for the Multilingualism SIG. A short AGM followed the event to elect committee members. In an inclusive spirit, participants were encouraged to submit a poster of a current project on multilingualism.
