Course Description: The goal of Anatomy and Physiology is to investigate and familiarize each student with the workings of the Human Body. A study of the Human Body opens our understanding to the new and powerful discoveries in the medical world. Your student may find a strong interest in this subject which could lead to a career in medicine.

Students will master structural names and locations, physiological contributions associated with these structures, and the impact disease and aging has on these contributions. In addition, medical terminology, diagnostic tools, current research, and clinical advances will be addressed and related to how disease can be avoided and controlled. The units covered will provide an in depth study of the eleven body systems. We will also be discussing careers in the medical field, and current, relevant medical ethical issues.

Objectives:

1. Students will explore and describe the body plan and organization and homeostasis.

2. Students will explain basic principles of body chemistry.

3. Students will describe basic concepts of structures and functions of cells.

4. Students will describe basic concepts of structures and functions of histology, and the integumentary system.

5. Students will describe the structures and functions of the skeletal system and its components.

6. Students will describe the structures and functions of the muscular system and its components.

7. Students will describe the structures and functions of the nervous system and special senses.

8. Students will describe the structures and functions associated with the endocrine system.

9. Students will describe the components and functions associated with blood.

10. Students will describe the structures and functions of the lymphatic system.

11. Students will describe the structures and functions of the cardiovascular system.

12. Students will describe the structures and functions associated with the respiratory system.

13. Students will describe the structures and functions associated with the digestive system.

14. Students will describe the structures and functions associated with the urinary system.

15. Students will describe the structures and functions associated with the reproductive system.

Required Materials:

• There is a $10.00 lab fee for this class. Students can pay for this fee in the school financial office. Bring receipt to Ms. McVey for 20 points. This includes those on fee waiver.

• Textbook- Anatomy, Physiology & Disease, 2nd Edition; Colbert, Ankley, Lee

This will be provided in class and available for check out if needed.

Student Expectations:

• Students are expected to abide by all of Hunter’s school rules and policies.

• Students will be in class on time and in their assigned seats when the tardy bell rings.

• Students will come to class prepared with all required materials, completed homework, assignments, etc.

• Students will show proper respect to the teacher (including substitutes), fellow students and school property at all times.

• Students will turn off and put away all cell phones and electronic devices before class. Use of these devices during class will result in immediate confiscation of the item.

• Students will not bring any food, drink or gum to class. Students may bring water to class as long as it is in a closeable bottle.

• Students will engage in appropriate behavior in the laboratory, they will follow all safety rules and will not engage in any type of “horseplay” in the lab. Violation of this rule will result in lab privileges being revoked.

Cell Phones: Cell Phones and other electronic devices are not permitted in class for any non-instructional purposes. With a first offense, the device will be taken away and can be returned to the student at the end of the class period. With any additional offense, the phone/device will be taken away and taken to the front office. In order to retrieve the phone, a parent will have to come in after school to do so.

Attendance: Regular attendance in this class is vital to success. Students who are frequently absent will fall behind quickly, and the amount of material we have to cover makes it difficult to get caught up. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what they missed in class. In addition, students will only be allowed to make up work for excused absences.

Tardies: In accordance with Hunter High School policy, students who are not in the classroom when the bell rings will be marked tardy. Excessive tardiness will affect your citizenship grade.

Grading Procedures: Grades will come from quizzes, notebooks, writing assignments, reports, presentations, and the final project.

Grades can be checked online at any time through Parent Portal ()

• Assignments: 20% Homework is due on assigned dates. Half credit will be given to completed homework that is late and will be accepted up to a week after the due date. No late work will be accepted the last week of the term.

• Labs/Projects: 25% Please make sure to be in class on lab days. If an excused absence cannot be avoided, an alternate assignment will be given for make-up. Various projects will be assigned throughout the year. Adequate time will be given to complete these projects and they are due on the assigned date.

• Binder: 15% Students are expected to take notes during class lectures. These notes will help students with homework assignments and to study for quizzes and tests. Class notes will be collected at the end of the term and graded.

• Quizzes/Exams: 40% There will be a quiz given at the beginning of class every day. Students who were absent will have 2 school days to make-up a missed quiz.

Extra Credit: May be given at the teacher’s discretion.

Grading Scale: Final grades will be broken down as follows:

|A =94-100% |B+ |=87-89% |C+ |=77-79% |D+ |=67-69% |

|A- =90-93% |B |=83-86% |C |=73-76% |D |=63-66% |

| |B- |=80-82% |C- |=70-72% |D- |=60-62% |

| | | | | |F |=Below 60% |

Citizenship Grade: An important aspect of your grade is citizenship; it will be based on: your ability to follow school and classroom rules, attendance, punctuality, participation, completion of work, and overall attitude and behavior. Here is the breakdown:

4-Honor: Student has no more than 1 tardy or one absence, comes

prepared and completes all assigned work and exhibits exemplary behavior.

3-Good: Student has no more than 2 absences or tardies, completes

most if not all assigned work, is prepared and exhibits good behavior in class.

2-Satisfactory: Student has no more than 3 absences or tardies, completes most work, is prepared for class and exhibits good behavior in class.

1-Poor: Student has 4 or more absences or tardies, doesn’t complete assigned work, disrupts class and the learning environment, and/or isn’t prepared for class.

0-Failure: Student has 5 or more absences or tardies, doesn’t complete assigned work, disrupts class and the learning environment, and is rarely prepared for class.

Special Note: Cheating of any kind in this class (this includes plagiarism) will not be tolerated. The student will receive an automatic zero on the assignment, their citizenship grade will be greatly affected and parents will be notified. Copying work from another student is considered cheating. Students are expected to be honest and complete their own work at all times.
