This 12-course SPS web curriculum is designed to prepare SPS staff to demonstrate competency by meeting the standards for VA SPS certification.This module provides an overview of surgical instrumentation and its use. It describes the various types of surgical equipment and the proper techniques for processing them for re use. This course will provide a foundation to build upon as you become more familiar with specific instrumentation through your daily work. Surgical Instrumentation Part 1 focuses on the role of surgical instrumentation, SPS staff responsibilities and basic hand held instruments.Target AudienceAll current and future VHA SPS technicians and supervisors to include nurses.Outcome/ObjectivesAt the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to:identify the background of basic surgical instruments and responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Service staff;classify basic hand held instruments;organize basic hand held instruments; andprocess basic hand held instruments.Registration / Participation in the Activity ProcedureLength of course: 1 hourReview EES Program BrochureAttend and participate in 100% of program activityComplete Post Test Exam at a minimum passing score of 80%Complete Program Evaluation no later than 10/30/2016.To access your Accredited certificate in TMS, please follow the steps below:From the Home screen in TMS, click on “Completed Work.”Hover the mouse over the title of the program, and click “View Details” in the popup window that appears. DO NOT click on the “Print Certificate” here – this will give you the generic TMS certificate.In the Completed Work Details screen, you should see a section named “Accreditation Details” Click the “Print Accredited Certificate” button next to your requested Accreditation.Your Accredited certificate should appear on the screen for you to save or print.Asynchronous Activity Instructions to complete activity: The participant should login to TMS from a VA computer.Type the title “Sterile Processing Services Level 1 Part 1 Surgical Instruments” in the search catalog field in the upper right on the TMS home page.Select the course from the catalog search results and select “Add to To Do list” to complete course at a later date or select “Start Course” to begin course immediately.Launch the brochure to review details of this training course as well as instructions on how to complete the course evaluation and acquire a certificate of completion.Return to Content Structure and select “Sterile Processing Services Level 1 Part 1 Surgical Instruments” course to begin the courseUpon completion of the course select “Return to Content Structure” and select the link to the evaluationGo to the Completed Works section in TMS to print out a certificate.Accreditation/ApprovalThe accreditation organizations for this course are listed below.American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)VHA Employee Education System is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.Note: ANCC continuing nursing education contact hours are not accepted by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN) toward license renewal for CA-licensed registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice nurses (APNs), unless the CA-licensed nurse-participants are physically outside of the state of CA when they start and complete activities sponsored by an ANCC accredited provider of continuing education for nurses.Designation of Continuing EducationAmerican Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)VHA Employee Education System designates this educational activity for 1 contact hours in continuing nursing education.Note: ANCC continuing nursing education contact hours are not accepted by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN) toward license renewal for CA-licensed registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice nurses (APNs), unless the CA-licensed nurse-participants are physically outside of the state of CA when they start and complete activities sponsored by an ANCC accredited provider of continuing education for nurses.Statement of ParticipationA certificate of completion will be awarded to participants and accreditation records will be on file at the Employee Education System.
