Nursing Certification - Weebly

CertificationPatricia CroteauUniversity of South FloridaCertificationThere are many benefits to being certified in a nursing specialty. Having a certification in a specialty benefits the nurse by validating their knowledge in their chosen specialty and, in turn, giving them increased confidence in their abilities. Certification benefits employers because “ongoing education and experience reduces a nurse's exposure to risk and better prepares him/her to make informed decisions that encompass a larger scope” ("Nurse certification benefits," 2012). More and more patients are becoming aware of the ability for nurses to become certified in their specialty. When given a choice, patients were more likely to choose a hospital with a higher percentage of certified nurses ("Nurse certification benefits," 2012).I do not have a certification in my specialty of medical-surgical nursing, but I have been a medical-surgical nurse for two years now so I am eligible to get certified. I have done some research into getting my certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). According to the ANCC, the requirements for certification in medical-surgical nursing are having a current, active RN license, 2 years full-time practicing as a registered nurse, and having 2,000 hours minimum of medical-surgical clinical practice and 30 hours of medical-surgical continuing education within the last 3 years ("Medical-surgical nursing eligibility," 2012).I feel it is important for nurses to be nationally certified because it shows that you are committed to and want to excel in your specialty. Nurses show their commitment by completing the previously stated requirements to obtain initial certification and by completing the necessary requirements every 5 years to maintain their certification. Certification requires nurses to continually obtain education relevant to their specialty which heightens their knowledge and expertise. ReferencesMedical-surgical nursing eligibility criteria.
