Fire Mitigation Operations on Chester Creek Trail

Beginning on Monday, July 17, the Anchorage Fire Department will continue its wildfire mitigation operations with a fuels reduction project near Merrill Field. This will take place in the Chester Creek Greenbelt near Lake Otis and East 20th Avenue behind the Eastridge Condominiums. Firefighters from the Anchorage Fire Department will thin out black spruce trees while retaining all hardwood trees. The goal of the project is to reduce the risk of fire spread and intensity while preserving wetland status. This will be accomplished through burning woody debris on site to minimize impact. The project will occur on Monday, July 17 and Wednesday, July 19. The project will continue in August when crews resume fall mitigation operations. This is a partnership project with the Municipality of Anchorage Parks & Recreation Department.

There may be a small amount of smoke visible from Lake Otis Parkway and the Chester Creek Trail. Crews have water on site to extinguish fires and limit the volume of smoke emitted from the burn piles. As an operational procedure, crews monitor weather conditions continually to maintain fire safety standards.

AFD reminds homeowners to prepare their homes and property for wildfire. Wildfire season is here. Move your firewood pile at least 30 feet from your home. Take care of your forested areas through tree thinning and pruning of the lower branches. For more information, visit fire or .
