Philippe Amstalavski, Associate Professor

Public Health, College of Health Email: pamstislavski@alaska.edu Philippe is an environmental scientist with broad interests in geoinformatics, mapping and spatial statistics to measure and communicate data on climate, physical activity, and subsistence to improve health outcomes in the North. His interests and experience include Arctic environmental health, effects of changes in hydrology on Circumpolar health, fate of contaminants in the environment, heavy metals detection and remediation. This spring he collected 50 gallons of birch sap and made a delicious syrup for friends.

Terese Anderson, Term Assistant Professor

Physical Therapy, College of Health Email: taanderson4@uaa.alaska.edu Having practiced as a Physical Therapist Assistant for 23 years, Terese was hired in April 2014 to teach the new PTA Program in UAA's Allied Health Department. She will also serve as Academic Clinical Coordinator of Education (ACCE), working with LeeAnne Carrothers in Allied Health. She has lived in Alaska since 1967.

Eric Andrews, Assistant Professor

Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences Email: eandrews5@uaa.alaska.edu Eric's research interests lie primarily in the areas of Combinatorics and Graph Theory. He studies Eulerian and Hamiltonian properties in graphs, graph decompositions, and structures and is also interested in graph coloring problems (both vertex and edge colorings) as well as distance and domination in graphs and their applications. When not in the classroom or conducting research, he likes to play tennis, racquetball and do almost anything outdoors.

Jennifer Aschoff, Associate Professor

Geology, Associate Professor Email: jaschoff@uaa.alaska.edu Jennifer earned her Ph.D. at the University of Texas Austin (2008), worked for British Petroleum for2.5 years as a sedimentologist, and was a tenure track professor at Colorado School of Mines for 3.5 years. Her research at UAA is focused on understanding the formation, fill and natural resource potential of sedimentary basins. With her students, she integrates outcrop, well-log and core data in order to reconstruct the paleoenvironments, paleotectonics and petroleum systems within the sedimentary basin. She teaches sedimentary and petroleum geology courses, as well as field geology and professional practices.

Ginger Blackmon, Assistant Professor

Educational Leadership, College of Education Email: glblackmon@uaa.alaska.edu Ginger's research agenda involves exploring the impact on student learning when schools are designed to address the learning needs, styles and opportunities for today's "digital natives". She questions time, place, delivery method, building design, and roles of stakeholders. Additionally, she looks at the impact on student success when priority is placed on mastering how to learn over mastering content. Her teaching interest is in leadership. She is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Lindsey Blumenstein, Assistant Professor

Justice, College of Health Email: lblumenstein@uaa.alaska.edu Lindsey's primary area of research is crime and deviance with a specialty in intimate partner violence. Her teaching interests include data analysis, research methods, and domestic violence. She has done some work for the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit. She was born and raised in South Florida and this is her first time living out of her home state!

Pam Bowers, Assistant Professor

Social Work, College of Health Email: pbowers5@uaa.alaska.edu Pam is originally from California but has lived in Colorado and Texas as well. Her research interests include cultural humility, cultural adaptations of health interventions, GLBT populations, health disparities, and social work education. Her teaching interests include diversity, research/program evaluation, community organizing, and school social work. She was once on The Wheel of Fortune television show; however, luck was not with her!

Sigrid Brudie, Assistant Professor

Library Science, Consortium Library Email: sbrudie@uaa.alaska.edu Sigrid is the medical reference librarian at the Alaska Medical Library (AML), a unit of the UAA/APU Consortium Library. Sigrid joined the AML staff in 2009 to work on the Arctic Health website and was hired as a library faculty member in 2013. She is the liaison librarian to UAA's Allied and Public Health departments, providing library instruction and research assistance to those students and faculty. In addition to her work as a librarian, Sigrid teaches medical transcription for UAA's School of Allied Health. She is a lifelong Alaskan with lots of family in Anchorage.

RaDeena Burgess, Term Assistant Professor

Human Services, Matsu College Email: rburges1@uaa.alaska.edu RaDeena retired after 21 years as a high school teacher in the Anchorage School District where she taught Integrated Science and Psychology ("regular" & Advanced Placement courses). She currently enjoys teaching in the Human Services department at Mat-Su College. She is also Interim Program Coordinator for the Human Services and Behavioral Sciences department as they search for a new Program Coordinator. Outside of education, she breeds, trains, and competes with her Australian Shepherds.

Erik Carlson, Assistant Professor

Library Science, Consortium Library Email: ecarls20@uaa.alaska.edu Erik Carlson was born across the street from the UAA/APU Consortium Library. After a wild decade of playing really high notes on his trumpet and acquiring advanced degrees from the University of Southern California, Yale, and Drexel, he returned home to pursue his first love: organizing all things. His professional world revolves around institutional repositories with frequent diversions into metadata, intellectual property, the semantic web, and human computer interaction.

Debra Crawford, Assistant Professor

Math - CPDS, Community and Technical College Email: dlcrawford@uaa.alaska.edu Debra is a term instructor, teaching math for College Prep and Developmental Studies. She has taught math as an adjunct for one academic year, prior to which she taught high school science for 16 years. She also has extensive experience as an interpretive naturalist in Alaska. Debra's husband taught at UAA for over 30 years and still continues to teach as an adjunct after retirement.

Media Csoba DeHass, Assistant Professor

Anthropology, College of Arts & Sciences Email: mkcsobadehass@uas.alaska.edu Media is an anthropologist interested in collaborative research, virtual repatriation, working with Alaska's Native communities, ethnohistory, and the anthropology of religion. She has been working with the Sugpiaq community of Nanwalek, Alaska, for the past ten years on a variety of projects, including her doctoral and postdoctoral research. She is originally from Hungary, but has been living in the U.S. for the past 14 years.

Ajit Dayanandan, Associate Professor

Accounting and Finance, College of Business & Public Policy Email: adayanandan@uaa.alaska.edu Ajit's primary area of research is corporate finance and investments. He is originally from India, but has studied and worked in Australia and Canada. His current research interests include event studies (e.g., impact of profit warning on stock returns), earnings management and corporate governance issues.

David Edmonds, Term Instructor

Automotive Technology, Community & Technical College Email: dedmond1@uaa.alaska.edu David has been an automotive instructor for the BMW product for 12 years, and he loves working on cars. He also loves helping people to be successful. He is relocating from Avondale, Arizona, and brought his 8 children and 2 dogs with him.

Sharon Emmerichs, Assistant Professor

English, College of Arts & Sciences Email: semmerichs@uaa.alaska.edu Sharon specializes in Early Modern literature--specifically Shakespeare--and is interested in ecocriticism and cultural definitions of landscape in Renaissance drama and poetry. She is also doing research for a project about Shakespeare and the seven deadly sins, which she plans to turn into her first academic book. An interesting fact about Sharon is that she has also published two speculative fiction novels under a pseudonym and wrote two others that have not yet been published.

Tammy Farrell, Term Assistant Professor

Math & Process Technology, Kenai Pennisula College Email: tfarrel3@kpc.alaska.edu Tammy's back ground is in aviation, where she is an aircraft mechanic, inspector, and avionics engineer. She has worked for the FAA in the development of transceivers for control towers and as a 747 fleet engineer for United Airlines. She loves to travel and meet interesting people along the way.

Sandie Gilliland, Term Instructor

Process Technology, Kenai Peninsula College Email: slgilliland@kpc.alaska.edu Sandie teaches the introductory classes for the process technology program at Kenai Peninsula College (KPC). He will also be helping place students in internships and full time positions. He is an avid outdoorsman.

Lukasz Grabarek, Assistant Professor

Mathematics, Kachemak Bay Campus & Matsu College Email: lgrabarek@matsu.alaska.edu Lukasz is a mathematician interested in complex function theory, location and distribution of zeros of entire functions. He is interested in teaching and developing hybrid and online courses. Lukasz is also part of the Math Kangaroo International Mathematics Competition development team. He is an avid hiker who dreams of summiting Mt. McKinley one day.

Albert R. Grant, Assistant Professor

Occupational Safety & Health, Kenai Peninsula College Email: argrant2@uaa.alaska.edu Albert's duties are to teach freshmen and sophomore level Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) courses in support of programs at KPC's Anchorage Extension Site; advise students in course selection, degree requirements and other related areas; manage OSH curriculum and the AAS degree program; develop and update OSH curriculum; perform community service related to the university/college, OSH program/OSH career field; and coordinate with industry partners.

Getu Hailu, Assistant Professor

Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering Email: ghailu@uaa.alaska.edu Getu's research interests include building integrated photovoltaic thermal (BIPV/T) systems, CFD of of BIPV/T systems, heat pumps, cryogenic abrasive jet micromachining and solid particle erosion. His teaching interests include Thermal Systems Design and HVAC.

Christian Haich, Term Instructor

Physics, College of Arts & Sciences Email: cahaich@uaa.alaska.edu Christian moved back to Alaska this summer after an absence of over 20 years, and will be an instructor in the Physics and Astronomy department. His interests include teaching physics and mathematics, bike riding, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, and juggling.

Hattie Harvey, Assistant Professor

Early Childhood Development, College of Education Email: haharvey@uaa.alaska.edu Hattie's research focuses on executive function development in young children and how executive function skills impact early mathematical learning and behavioral self-regulation. Her teaching interests include early childhood inclusive practices, models of positive behavior supports, and using assessment to guide instructional planning. She is also involved in a number of projects with the Anchorage School District preschool programs to evaluate the effects of Response to Intervention (RTI) on student outcomes in early childhood classrooms.

David Helmso, Term Assistant Professor

Aviation Maintenance Technology, Community & Technical College Email: djhelmso@uaa.alaska.edu David comes to UAA after serving 24 years in the U.S. Navy [ballistic missile submarine] and the U.S. Air Force [Airborne Warning and Control Systems]. He did Masters work in Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma, earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Charleston Southern University, and an A.A.S. in Aviation Maintenance Technology at UAA. His teaching interests are in aviation maintenance and repair technology. He is currently a project volunteer and docent at the Alaska Aviation Museum, a founding member, docent, warbird pilot, and mechanic for Wings of Freedom Alaska Aviation Museum, and a member of the Alaska Wing of the Commemorative Air Force.

Drew Holt, Term Instructor

Mathematics, College of Arts & Sciences Email: deholt@uaa.alaska.edu Drew's area of interest is mathematics. He is currently learning Mathematica. He likes to do math and talk about math. He graduated from East Anchorage High School, then joined the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a missile mechanic. He attended college at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he graduated with an M.S. in Mathematics and met his wife, Elizabeth. He worked for British Petroleum for about 21 years. Drew likes to work on projects in his home shop and once rode a bicycle from Fairbanks to Valdez.

D'Arcy Hutchings, Term Assistant Professor

Library Science, Consortium Library Email: dlhutchings@uaa.alaska.edu After working as a staff member at UAA for 12 years, D'Arcy started her first faculty position at the Consortium Library in February. As the Instructional Design Librarian, her role is to provide support for library faculty with regard to their instruction.

Alexander James, Assistant Professor

Economics, College of Business and Public Policy Email: ajames27@uaa.alaska.edu Alexander's research and teaching interests broadly include environmental and resource economics. He is also interested in analyzing a variety of economic problems using experimental methods, especially those related to non-market valuation and public policy. Alexander is from California, went to graduate school in Wyoming, completed his post- doctoral research in Oxford, England and is excited to now be a resident of Alaska!

Johnny Kirby, Assistant Professor

Refrigeration & Heating, Matsu College Email: jkirby4@matsu.alaska.edu John grew up near the line between Arkansas and Oklahoma with a background in agriculture. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1993 with a B.S. in Animal Science. After moving to Alaska in the late 90's, and seeing a need in industry, he worked and acquired an A.A.S. in Refrigeration and Heating Technology from Mat-Su College in 2005. In 2007, after working in the Heating, Ventilation, and

Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry for a few years, he began teaching science in public school. He enjoys teaching and HVAC, and at Mat Su he is privileged to do both!

Max Kullberg, Assistant Professor

Medical Education, College of Health Email: mpkullberg@uaa.alaska.edu Max was born and raised in Alaska and after completing a degree in Physics in the lower 48, came back to finish up his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UAA. Most recently, he was in Denver for a Pharmaceutical Sciences Postdoc, but he is very excited to be back as part of the WWAMI team. His lab research uses targeted nanoparticles to deliver therapeutic genes and drugs specifically to cancer cells with the hopes of establishing an anti-tumor immune response.

Suzanne Lorenz, Term Instructor

Physics, College of Arts & Sciences Email: selorenz@uaa.alaska.edu Suzanne is newly arrived to UAA from Purdue University in Indiana, where she completed her thesis on mapping dark matter with weak gravitational lensing and stayed on at a visiting scholar with the VERITAS Collaboration. While at Purdue in this capacity, Suzanne taught at both Valparaiso and Purdue Universities. Additionally, she is an accomplished amateur carpenter (ABCO).

Mary Mathie, Term Assistant Professor

Political Science, College of Arts & Sciences Email: memathie@uaa.alaska.edu Mary Mathie came to Anchorage from Ontario, Canada, by way of Waco, Texas. Before her graduate work, she worked in political campaigning and energy policy research in Toronto. Dr. Mathie has taught American politics and political philosophy at Baylor University and the College of the Holy Cross. Her teaching and research interests focus on American law, government, and political thought; the American regime in comparative perspective, especially with Canada; political philosophy; and politics.
