Ancient Civilizations Group Project

Topics: Each group will be assigned one of the following topics

• Ancient Egypt

• Ancient Mesopotamia (includes the Sumerians)

• Ancient China

• The Inca

• The Maya

• The Greece

• Ancient India

• Ancient Rome

Your Task: Work in groups to do all of the following:

1. Presentation:

• Prepare a 10-15 minute (approximately) group presentation on your civilization. Everyone in your group must be involved in the presentation.

• Each Person must research at least one section of the information listed below.

• As a group create a visual aid to help you communicate information about your ancient civilization. This visual aid can be either something that you show through Prezi, a PowerPoint, or Video or some combination of the three.

2. Infographic:

• Each group must create an electronic infographic.

• It must include the following

i. A map of the ancient civilization

ii. A summary of each of the topics below in an easy to read format

iii. Two images beyond the map that enhances the understanding of the ancient civilization.

Areas that You Must Research: The following areas are things that you must research and present information on in your presentation in order to be successful on this assignment. DO NOT give one topic to each person in your group without a plan for all group members to share their findings.

You do not need to answer all of the following questions. They are meant to guide/start your thinking about what types of information to research. You can include additional information if you’d like. For some civilizations there might be no remaining evidence for a particular idea – so you can either make an educated guess or skip that part.

Government Systems:

• What type of government did your civilization have?

• How was it organized?

• What were some of the functions the government did?

• Did their government do a “good” job?

• What were some of the benefits and drawbacks to their form of government?

Legal Systems:

• How did your civilization deal with law breakers?

• Did they have written down laws? If so, what were some advantages to having them written down?

• Were their laws fair?

• How did their laws get made?

Religious Beliefs and Systems:

• What were some of their major religious concepts?

• How important was religion to their daily life?

• Based on their religious beliefs, does your civilization appear to value some things more than others?

• What were some of their religious practices like?

Economic Systems:

• What type of economic system did your civilization have?

• How well did it function?

• How was wealth measured in your civilization?

• What types of technology did your civilization’s economic system depend on?

• Was your civ’s economic system effective at encouraging trade? If so, with whom did they trade and for what?

Urban Culture:

• What was life like in the cities in your civilization?

• What were some of the typical problems faced by early city dwellers?

• Why do you think people were attracted to the city?

• How as city life different for people of different status?

Writing and History:

• Did your civilization have writing? If so, what role did it play in the daily functioning of your civilization?

• Describe the writing system of your civilization if it had one.

• In what ways did writing change or affect your society?

• Did your civilization keep track of its own history? If so how?
