Vocabulary

1. Warlord - a leader who has his own army

2. aristocrat - a person who belongs to the highest class of society

3. ancestor - a family member who is no longer living

4. pictograph - a symbol in a writing system based on pictures

5. ideograph - a symbol in a writing system that represents a thing or an idea

6. bureaucracy - a group of non-elected government officials

7. Confucianism - a system of beliefs based on the teachings of Confucius; duty is central idea

8. Daoism - a Chinese philosophy focused on obtaining long life and living in harmony with nature

9. legalism - a Chinese philosophy based on the importance of laws

10. social class - a group of people at a similar cultural, economic, or educational level

11. filial piety - the responsibility children have to respect, obey, and care for their parents

12. censor - an official who made sure that government workers did their jobs

13. currency - something that is used as money

15. tenant farmer - a farmer who works land owned by someone else

16. acupuncture - a Chinese practice of inserting fine needles through the skin to treat disease or relieve pain
