Ms. Barnes was motivated by systems limitations in healthcare. She recognized the importance of the person’s needs beyond standard medical treatment. She is working with the Cultural Wellness Center’s Health Hub to allow ancient whole grains to be more accessible for community. She hopes to continue her work in community nutrition.?Doug Grade is a senior in the integrated 4+1 from St. Paul, MN. I am focusing on sports nutrition. He completed an internship at Midtown Global Market where he researched ancient whole grains, developed flyers on the nutrition of ancient whole grains, and conducted interviews with food systems professionals. He has completed two semesters at Training Haus with a sports dietitian. She is exploring pain points in a nutrition sensitive food system related to the underutilized grains like barley and ancient whole grains from Africa. Her work also includes addressing gaps in nutrition education related to experiential learning and transferable skills.Alissa Perteet-Jackson is a PhD student in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota where she is studying culinary heritage and ancient whole grains. She has also created a strong community garden relationship between NNHSC's WIC clinics and Chicago Lights by initiating interactive garden events and learning activities for WIC participants. In addition to her role at Mayo Clinic, Angelica co-owns Synergy Nutrition Counseling, LLP, a virtual practice that provides group nutrition counseling to individuals recovering from addiction. Angelica’s graduate research centered on improving nutrition students’ involvement in policy and advocacy which gave her an understanding of and appreciation for the profound impact public policy has on the profession. Today, she uses her expertise to provide policy and advocacy education that empowers students and professionals to share their input with lawmakers.Tessa Lasswell works in the UMN School of Public Health’s Division of Epidemiology and Community Health as a research study coordinator on food policy and chronic disease management studies. She also works as the program manager for the Coordinated Master’s Program guiding students through their journeys as public health students and dietetic interns. Tessa is also consulting for Dakota County school districts as they advance their wellness efforts. It is because of both the research and community experiences that Tessa pursued the role as State Policy Rep with MAND. She believes that well-designed research studies are imperative to creating evidence-based policies that also take into account communities’ lived experiences. It is only when research, community work, and policy intersect is sustainable systems change possible.Becca Leighton is a Health Promotion Specialist at Boynton Health working on addressing food and housing insecurity among college students as well as nutrition health promotion. She oversees the Nutritious U Food Pantry which provides fresh produce and staple foods to over 800 students every month at the University of Minnesota. In addition to administering emergency food programs and advising a nutrition health promotion student group, she co-facilitates the Thrive: Basic Needs Coalition with the goal of addressing the root causes of food and housing insecurity at the University of Minnesota. Through her experience with organizing as a student and as an advisor of two student groups, she understands the importance of engaging and empowering students to create the changes they wish to see.? ................
