Athletics and sports were as popular and significant in the ancient Greek world as they are today, and so offer an excellent insight into the life on the ancient Greeks. This project will allow you to become and expert in the development of Greek athletics, the nature of individual events, the history of a particular sport, and much more. The project will be divided into several parts listed below:

Background: 40 Points

1. Origins of your sport – why was it created? (Example running distances why were they chosen) where?

2. Founders / governing bodies – Included influential founders, Ruling entities, etc…

3. Rules – Explain the sport as if the audience has never player or seen this sport – include how the game is scored

4. Evolving – Give examples of how your sport has changed over time (at least two examples of rule changes or strategy/style changes)

Famous Events: 30 Points

1. Famous athletes – Create at least a top 5 list of the greatest players (do not just use current generation) – explain why they are considered the best

2. Greatest Games – Create a top 5 list of the greatest games played of your sport – provide a video clip is possible (8 minute maximum)

3. What countries have dominated the sport in the past – if applicable who won in the most recent Olympics

Current Facts: 30 Points

1. What areas of the world is your sport currently played – what other major competitions have been created

2. Who are the favorites in the upcoming Olympics / World Championships

3. Who are some of the current best players – explain why

Presentation: 20 Points

Extra Credit – If you have the possibility of demonstrating your sport or if you find something interesting about your sport please include it and you will be eligible for extra points.

You will have time in the computer lab to research your project but some outside work may be required.
