COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

MAY 14, 2005

CHAIR (Steps to lectern)

Good morning! My name is Lucia Quinn. I am a graduate of Simmons College and Chair of the Board of Trustees. On behalf of my fellow Trustees, I welcome you to the 100 Commencement100th Commencement Commencement ceremony. One hundred years of Simmons graduates! Thatis is a wonderful record!!

Our Trustees are men and women with ultimate fiduciary responsibility for Simmons. This is a serious duty, and they work hard to fulfill it. As Chair I appreciate their skillful service, and I would like those Trustees present to stand and receive your applause.

[TRUSTEES STAND]

We congratulate and honor those undergraduate and graduate students who are graduating today as well as all of you – family and friends, faculty and staff – whose labor and love have made this day possible for our graduates. I would particularly like to recognize the families of the graduates who have often made significant sacrifices to make today possible. Would the family members of our graduating students please rise to receive our applause?

[FAMILIES STAND]

The pursuit of learning is one of the oldest of human endeavors. In fact, these commencement festivities have their origins in ancient rituals. Members of our College community are clothed in caps, hoods, and gowns, a tradition which evolved from academic costumes worn by faculty and students to keep warm in the drafty classrooms of colleges in medieval Europe. The different colors of caps and hoods signify the degree earned by the wearer as well as the institution which granted the degree.

We still follow academic traditions. Latin was the official language of education for hundreds of years, and today our most accomplished scholars will receive the designation of cum laude—the Latin phrase meaning, “with honors.” At the diploma ceremonies for each school immediately following this general ceremony, graduating students will demonstrate their educational accomplishments before this the assembled faculty with an oration, just as they have done for centuries. But fear not, these students will not address you in Latin!

While we honor past traditions by wearing academic garb, listening to student orations and using Latin phrases, now we look to the future that will be represented by you, our honored graduates.

We Trustees of Simmons College are proud of your accomplishments. We are confident you will carry the Simmons name into your professions and communities with distinction, dignity, and pride.

Congratulations.

PRESIDENT Thank Lucia Quinn. Mention:

• Recognize Bill Holmes

• Simmons is awarding 1,000____ degrees today, and will have awarded 1,550_____ degrees for during all of this year. Though this is a large number, each of you will all be acknowledged by me, by me as President, here on behalf of Trustees and our faculty, and then individually you will receive your degree from the Dean of your specific school in the a ceremony which will follow this one.your Dean in your school

• Graduating students come from as near as Brookline and Brighton and as far away as Trinidad and Tanzania

• Thank Commencement planners, especially Donna Dolan, Registrar, and the entire Registrar’s Office, Melissa Poehnert, the President’s Office and Commencement Volunteers.
