I look forward to a fantastic and productive year and I hope you will enjoy sharing in this exciting education journey with your student!

Grades:

The students’ grade will be based on percentages: Classwork – 20%, Homework – 10%, Projects – 20%, and Tests/Quizzes – 50%

Homework: Students will be assigned homework regularly and usually will be given class time to start their assignment. They will receive 2 points for each assignment complete as per the rubric. They will receive one point for a homework needing improvement and three points (extra credit) for any homework that is typed with no errors. They will have an opportunity to redo any homework not meeting the standards.. They will have one week to correct or complete the homework. This will also help students with grade recovery. All homework must have the student’s first and last name, subject, class period, and date on the top right hand side of the paper with the title of the assignment as the heading. Classwork (work or activities completed within the class period) will be graded using the same rubric. Both will be posted on the whiteboard to be written down into planners and posted on the teacher’s blog site: cumptonm.

**Please check to see if your student is recording information in his/her planner. This is an excellent way to keep track of your student’s upcoming tests, projects, progress reports, etc.

Tests: Students will be given several tests during the nine weeks. They will begin the year with a World History EOC Baseline Test which they will also take at the end of the school year to assess their growth in Ancient World History content. They will also have chapter tests, a nine weeks test, and a midterm if appropriate. Students will always be given notice of any test two weeks in advance and should be prepared to take the test on the date given. Make- ups will only be given to students who have an excused absence on the date of the test. If you are absent the day before the test, you are still required to take the test on the date given. Test questions will be from notes taken in class (classroom notebook), vocabulary flash cards/graphic organizers, and assignments given as homework. Homework is always a good source for test questions.

*The student must score a 60% or better to pass the test.

Projects: Students will be given various projects during the nine weeks period. There will be appropriate time to complete the projects. Some projects will be group and some individual, both will be graded. Rubrics will always be provided as a guideline for grading.

*The student must score 60% or better on these projects in order to receive a passing grade.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given periodically over the nine weeks period. Some will have advance notice, like vocabulary, and others will be given with no notice. The student will not be able to retake these quizzes. The teacher will always review the material before the quiz. Most will be over homework and class work students have had a chance to complete.

*The passing grade for quizzes is 60%.

Educational Materials: Pens/Pencils

Composition notebook (2)

3-prong folder (with pockets)

Highlighter

Portfolios: Individual folders will be kept in class with student’s tests, self-evaluations, and other important work. Portfolios will be used to show student growth during the course of the year and will be used during parent conferences. (Please note that students will be allowed to take work home to show parents but it must be returned to be filed, thank you!)

Late Work: During the first nine weeks, students will have 3 days to turn in late work. Each day, one letter grade will be taken off. Starting the second nine weeks they will have 2 days, the third nine weeks homework will only be accepted one day late with a deduction of points. By the fourth nine weeks no late work will be accepted in order to prepare students for 7th grade.

Make-Up Work Policy: If students are absent from class they should check the blog to find missing assignments from the day(s) they were out. When they return to class, students should check the “Absent” board in the back of the classroom to get any worksheets or handouts that were distributed. If an assignment was assigned prior to the absence, the assignment will be due when the student returns to class.

Parent Conferences: All conferences will be scheduled with Guidance at

346-5650 x 114. Conferences will be with the entire team. This way the parent has a complete report from each teacher.

Grading Scale: Students will be evaluated in accordance with the standard Duval County Public Schools’ grading scale.

Progress Reports: Progress reports will be issued once every nine weeks. If a student is performing below standard the teacher will issue a class progress report and a scholarship warning. Students will have 2 days to return it signed.

Class Participation: Students are expected to contribute to the class. They can better prepare themselves by reading assigned material and familiarizing themselves with ideas/topics discussed in class.

Class Expectations:

o Students are to come to class prepared every day.

o When entering the classroom, students should get all housekeeping items taken care of (sharpening pencils, getting your notebook/paper ready, and anything else that would interfere with the lesson.)

o Bell Ringers are to be done upon entering the classroom after housekeeping.

o No food, drinks, or gum in the classroom – water is acceptable.

o All tests are to be returned promptly. Students who fail any Chapter Assessments will be allowed to, “recycle” (retake) the test during a tutoring session if they so choose.

o Participation is a must as there will be many activities that involve vocal discussions (Socratic Circles, debates, etc.)

o Respect for yourself and all other classmates is fully expected.

o Follow the rules and have fun!
